potty training
 
Hello

I have a new yorkie and she is only 5 pounds and doesnt want to go outside at all. I have an x small crate for her to sleep in upstairs in our bedroom and she does well no potty in the crate. When she eats I take her to the basement and put her in an XX large crate with puppy pads in it. She goes on the puppy pads right away and then I take her out and praise her. We go upstairs right away I dont leave her in this crate at all and I dont close the door.

Is this ok to do? it seems to be working and is very easy for everyone in the house to participate in training her.

Hi - Welcome to YT!

Sounds like you're doing well; but, she needs a potty place she can get to on her own - unless the family intends to be involved in every potty trip for the rest of her life ;).

well she cant go up and down the stairs yet but I am going to work on that. Now on this forum more people seem to understand me not letting the yorkie out in the weather here. At the pet store they people had a fit when I mentioned I wanted to train my dog to use a litter box or a box in my basement.

Inside training is certainly 'do'able. My Abigail is paper trained inside, because I can't always be out with her. I'm just suggesting that your pooch have a potty station that she can be successful on her own - perhaps one on each floor, until she can manage the stairs.

oh ok I didnt know it would be ok to have her going in more than one spot.
Here legs are still a bit short I will post a pic of her. she is learning to get in and out of bed.

Sure...for awhile, anyway. Until she gets the whole potty-in-the-right-place thing down. The main hurdle is to get her to know when she needs to go, and that she needs to "go" on pee pads, paper, or litter (whichever you're using). Then, when you're sure she can make it to the place you want her to ultimately go, you can eliminate the extra potty place. But, she must be able to get to her target area, on her own. If you want her to go in the basement, she should be able to negotiate the stairs, and scratch (or whine) at the basement door, to let someone know what she needs. Some people use little training bells they hang on the door, and train the dog to paw the bells to signal a potty need.

How old is she?

Yes the weather in Chicago is horrible. I feel the weather is too cold for my 13week yorkie even if i did bundle him up! If I take him outside for any reason I put his sweater and coat on :eek: I don't want him to get sick so I don't want to take him out to potty. So right now I am paper training him. Don't worry we understand :)
