confused about crate punishment hi everyone, i've been reading up on crate training (both in books and through YorkieTalk), and i'm confused now. what i am confused about is what is considered punishment?? i've read in the dog books that if you want your yorkie to accept the crate as his/her den, then you must not, under any circumstances, use the crate as a punishment. but THEN, i've read some people suggesting using the crate as a "time out" when your yorkie is doing something wrong like barking or biting. am i wrong, or is "time out" not punishment??? when i was little, and my dad put me in the corner for "time out" i definitely came to HATE that corner... so, in conclusion, i need clarification on when it's okay to put your puppy in his/her crate and when it's not. Thanks so much! :p |
at our house a crate is ONLY for bed, car travel, naps and when we are having supper (to keep her away from us having supper) when layla is disciplined i usually yell "AH AH" or when she was a puppy if she was biting i would flip her on her back until she gave in.. NEVER was she in her crate as punishment.. and she LOVES her crate now :) |
Good question! In our house, Coby LOVES his kennel. Probably because he gets a treat every single time he enters his kennel. Coby is great at just going into his kennel when he sees us put our coats on. But I do use the kennel as a "time out" but that's probably not the right term for how I use it. When Coby is getting a little rambunctious - getting carried away, wound up, behaving badly, etc., I send him to his kennel to "chill out". He still gets a treat for going in the kennel on command, so it's not really a punishment. It's just a time for him to calm down, wind down, relax. I equate it to having a toddler that is becoming over-tired and starting to act up. You would know that the toddler needed a nap to un-wire. It's just placing them in their "quiet place". |

I am now trying to get Bijou to do this. bandit used to go in his kennel when he was little but stopped doing so now. so long as he now retires to his doggie bed on command, or willingly and stays put. Bijou is not afraid of his crate at all but will like him to march in willingly and me not have to put him in. |
My sister's 15 y/o yorkie sleeps in the crate, and also goes there when told to get out of the way, or if he is being bad. I have the crate out with the door open, so if Chip and Harley want to go in they can. Lately they haven't gone in since Zippy has been here for extended periods of time, and pretty much claimed it as his crate. Chip used to go in every once in a while, and Harley just has no interest in it. The only time I use the crate with Harley is when I catch him in the act of peeing inside, when he finished his pee I immediately put him in the crate as a time out. As for training him to go to the crate on command, start with a cue word like bed, crate, box, etc. and reward him when he goes there. Then you can build up telling him from a distance. |

My Missy goes in her crate on demand as well... we just say.. go in your bed and she goes... in the morning, we don't even have to tell her, when i spray my perfume, she's running into her bed... and it's also because everytime she goes in we give her a treat... her treats are dried liver.. she does anything for those... so basically, you have a command that tells them to go in their crate... then when they do, give them a treat... do this always and it will work. |
