Yorkies are the hardest breed to housebreake.
 
I think yorkies has got to be one of the hardest breed's to break. My brother and his family has shi-tzu and they had her trained in one day with no accidents. She had puppies and everyone of the puppies was trained in one day. It was amazing. Dusty is going on two years and we are still trying to train.

hmm..my girls were very easy to train with the wee wee pads..they have accidents sometimes but they are 99% house trained

Yes that is a well known fact about Yorkies. I don't really no why.
Buddy did not follow that trait thank heavens. He was completely trained
a month after I got him at 14.1/2 wks.

I think some yorkies are stubborn and thats why they are difficult to house train

my Bichon is almost 2 and is still hard to house train! its frusterating.

No kiding!!!:eek: Izzy will go outside to do her business but she does NOT tell me when she has to go..that's our problem...if we don't let her out every two hours....Houston..we have a problem....and we still get accidents between those two hours sometimes..geez louise. She is just 13 months old....so I hope she catches on soon.

Dusty let's me know when he need's to go outside but he still comes back in and goes potty again. He will go to the back door and tell me but he will also go in my little girls room and go potty. He has a pee pad in his room but god forbid he use it during the day.

Mine ring a bell to go outside. It was a full time job for months getting them trained, but now that they are it's wonderful. No baby gates, no pens... they sleep in their crates sometimes but don't have to.

I have bells on my website if you need some :)

Yes they are... Even after years and years of research, that is something I did not learn til' after I got my pup... Not like it would have changed my mind about her, because Ive wanted a Yorkie for over 10 yrs... So, its worth it for me :) Every pup is different...

I agree, Bandit my pommie learnt in a couple of weeks at a tiny age of 3,5 months. Scooby bless his littel heart never learned, he will do it out when we took him, but he had accidents like every 30 minutes at 7 months old:( he was a yorkie full blood. Bijou is doing ok so far, but still has some accidents like excitement peeing like just now. I left him alone for 4 hours out of his crate and NO pee until I showed up, he jumped out of excitement and weed himself:( bandit didnt pee he waited until he was taken out. Some dogs learn some dont. Persistence and consistency is the key I guess.

I like that tell bell idea. My little guy goes to the back door but does not make any sort of sound so I don't know he's there until his bell around his neck stops moving.

I wish he would bark to go out but he barely barks at all.

I don't know if your site is having problems or its my connection but it doesn't seem to be loading pictures for me. Just letting you know.

I think the training plays a major roll in housetraining. It seems that quite a few people just don't know how, or they are not consistant and persistant enough as well. Also some Yorkies take a little longer than others, but I really don't think it's just the breed.

I agree, and I also think a lot of people seem to either expect a 4 month old to be housetrained and just know what to do without training or they give up on an 8 month old who isn't trained yet and just say they aren't trainable. When I suggest using crates or leashes in the house people complain that they don't want to do that. They expect it to be easy. It's not. But that doesn't mean it's not possible!

I guess it just depends on the dog itself. I have a Bichon and she was trained in a couple months, and rings a bell to go out. I sure hope my new Yorkie is a easy one. I've always taught my dogs to go outside, I've never used piddle pads so this will be interesting to see how it goes. I never leave my pups out of my sight when they are running loose, and when I can't keep 2 eyes on them at all times, then they go into the crate.

Do you have to use pee-pads? Mine go outside. I know WI is colder but we have 12 inches of snow here and even last week with the cold they went outside... Loki pees quickly and comes back in the house. Sammy spends 20 minute outside eating snow...

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Both of mine were easy to train. Go outside w/out problems. But then again my hubby calls me the housebreaking Hitler!

Dusty will go to the back door if I am in the back part of the house & he will bark. If I am in the kitchen he will go to the kitchen door & bark but when I ask him if he need's to go potty he will run to the back door. I think it is cute. It also let's me know how smart he is because he know's he can not go out the kitchen door but he know's to go to a door near me to let me know he has to go potty.

I don't "plan" on using them...I got some washable ones for just in case we have to leave her in the bathroom for a long time. Otherwise, I'm planning on training her outside. Hopefully having Chloe' show her the ropes will help alot.

Same here! Patience and consistency is a must. I crate trained and use a bell also. Roxie is 3 years old and we have been accident free since she was 7 1/2 months. Yes, It was frustrating and I didn't think I would ever have my freedom back but it was all worth it in the end.

My yorkie was potty trained very quickly...I think it's the individual dog.

Izzy rings the bell to go outside but only to chase the squirrels - just can't get her to ring the bell to go outside potty.:confused: I have always used our phrase..."outside potty ring the bell" and take her paw to tap on the bell. She caught on alright but figured out outside=squirrel....so I know she gets it but not for potty.:(

Aww... she's smart! Sammy loves chasing squirrels too. I just took her out every time she rang the bell even if she was totally kidding. If she rang it, then didn't go potty, she got a time out in her crate until she did really go potty. That helped a little. So did time and consistency. One day she just figured it out. We still give her a LOT of encouragement. My neighbors think I'm crazy for doing the Sammy pooped happy dance... :rolleyes:

I know..she's a little stinker. I'm never giving up..one of these days she will catch on..she's still a baby in my book.;) She goes spastic when she sees the squirrels in the backyard and then she rings the bell...no way sister. Consistency and time..she'll eventually get it.

Hope others can give me suggestions on how to get Izzy to let me know she has to go potty.

It's funny cause during the summer.. someone will go outside with her every 30-1 hour.. BUT in the meantime.. she will still do her business in the house on the rug:mad:
I'm hoping Evie will be easier to train (are my hopes too high??)
