A little help please ... I have a 4.5 month old Yorkie female, love her dearly but she is soooo needy. She constantly wants to be held. I've tried ignoring her, getting up and walking away etc. She barks sometimes and cries others. There is nothing wrong with her other than she just wants to be touched/held/petted constantly. does anyone else have this problem? Our other yorkie is MUCH more independant! |
Their personalities vary like all other dogs. Yorkies are born and bred lapdogs so that is where it comes from. Good luck...not sure what to recommend. I would give her cuddle time but if and when I have things to do that is what has to be done and I won't feel guilty. Just know that Yorkies are master manipulators and can turn on the charm to get what they want. |
Oh I do realize they are lap dogs which I LOVE. I'm at home all day everyday (except to run errands and such occasionally) and we cuddle a lot. However it is CONSTANT that she wants to be with me. I don't mind the cuddling when I'm lounging and not doing things (cleaning cooking etc) but when i'm busy she has plenty of toys and bones to play with...I was just wondering if there was something i could do to help her besides ignore her. |
The best thing you can do is get her a playmate. After all one Yorkie is never enough. ;) ;) ;) |

If you can't get her a playmate...may I suggest a puppy sling so the little darling is with you all she wants:D |
If you can't afford another yorkie, I'd suggest considering a kitten. |
My husband and i are not ready for another yorkie yet, and neither of us are cat people. Eventually we would like to get another yorkie but for now what we have is enough. Although a playmate sounds great in theory. I want her to develop some independance and not rely on constant attention from myself or anyone (including other animals). |
Has she always been this way? If her personality has changed recently or if the neediness has sharply increased, could it be hormone related? You said she's 4.5 months......*sometimes* they change around puberty. Also, does she have much experience around other dogs, such as obedience classes or meetups? This may be another way of getting her to look forward to "non-human" attention until you can get another dog. It sounds like you must be a wonderfully mommy if she loves to be with you so much. I know it's hard to break away, but I agree it would be good for her not to rely on you for all her happiness. |
I think I'm a pretty good momma! I love her dearly but I have housework that needs done, she is currently playing on her own so I'm trying to just let her have fun while I do a few things! |
when my yorkie was small and I wanted to do housework or cooking she went in her crate with a chew stick. I used to put the radio on next to her crate. She soon realised it was ok to be in there and when she was quiet and I wanted to I let her out never when she was yapping. |
