HELP! Digging & bring in plant parts etc. I have a 6 mos. old Yorkie who just will not stop digging around my plants, lilies especially and pulling off bulbs and dragging them in the house and chewing them all over. I have tried scolding her in a firm voice, she runs away when I try to get the things from her making it an endless aggravation and clean up. She has a doggie dog so I have shut her out to see if she'd get the idea she's being punished. That hasn't worked either. Any suggestions before she wears me out mentally and physically??? Thanks! I've had some sucess with the "come" command but she only listens when she wants to. Even though I have awarded her with treats and praise. |
With these babies you have to stay as close on their heels as possible when they are outside in order to keep them safe from either eating things they shouldn't and birds of prey. This way you can correct unwanted behavior before they get to be a habit. ;) |
Thanks for the advice. My first Yorkie never did this and I was beside myself since I have done everything the same trying to train this one. The first had a doggie door too and went in and out at will. Even if I am out with her she runs and hides under bushes with her plant parts she's snatched before I could get to her. She's so fast and our yard is large. I'm no spring chicken now like I was some 20 yrs. ago when my 1st one was a pup! LOL I guess I'll just have to keep at it and see who breaks down first, her or me! |
Unless you are a very patient person, your furdaughter will win :D Please be sure that the plants are not on the "dangerous plant list". You might have to rethink your landscaping and only go with doggie safe plants :lol tears On a more serious side -- correct her every time she goes astray, take away the offending plant part and scold her. |
Is there a way you could buy some really inexpensive wire fencing to block off and just leave a little area for her? We do this when we put Scotts down. We take one side at a time. Anyway it would be worth a try to break the habit she has started. Put some of her favorite things to play with out there as well. Maybe a little pole with a rope attached to the top and a ball at the other end of the rope high enough that she can knock the ball standing on her back legs. They seem to love doing that. |
