Thanks for the great site. I bought a book on it at Petsmart and it wasn't all that useful. Linus is doing great with regular training (3 new tricks in the past week...sit took us a while) but I think he will respond really well to the clicker!

I have one of those bought it for my bird. tried it on my dogs it just makes them bark louder every time i click it, my bird didn't like it either lol

I've posted about this before - first "clicker training" is NOT about the clicker is about a training method called "operant conditioning" - if the clicker isn't working for you all you need to do is find something else to use as a marker. In Seaworld, the use a whistle. With noise sensitive rescue dogs, I use a "kiss."

Second - there are now many types of clickers on the market that modulate the sound from the clicker so you can work to desensitize your animals to the sound. Once the associate the clicker with food and fun, it becomes a positive experience for them. ( I also clicker train my Macaw).

Yes, I remember all this from my Psychology 101 class. Pavlovs "classical condtioning" in my book, brings back some memories. ;) :animal-sm

Yes. Operant conditioning takes Pavlov's classical conditioning one step further. Once the dog is "drooling" for the ring of the bell, we know he has come to associate the bell with food. So now, we use the "be" (the clicker) as a tool to let the dog know when he has EARNED his food. Dog does something we like, we click, he knows he's going to be rewarded, so he tries to do that thing again so that he can earn the reward again. That's how it works!
