gentle leader? I've heard some great things about the gentle leader harness, but I was wondering what you all thought of it. I'm thinking about trying it on Smokey first because he is so spastic and it's hard having control over two dogs at once, even with a coupler. Has anybody had experience with the head collar vs the other one that goes around the legs? |

I see a lot of dogs with those on at the adoption events that I volunteer for and it seems to work. |
We use the easy walk harness, not the one that goes around the nose. it helps a lot with pulling you just have to be very careful with the size, petite is very small but then the jump to the small was too big for us. I just learned they came up with a bunch of new sizes like petite small which is what I am gong to get. Milo is around 7lbs. It may not be the cutes harness so I tend to change his collars and leads more often. |
the gentle leader is an excellent tool if used properly. The behaviorist at my hosp did a demonstration about them. She put it on a 8 month old hyper rottie pup and within minutes the dog was not jumping or pulling on the lead anymore. i was amazed. We tell all our clients with orthopedic patients who are hyper to buy one and start using it immediately. we've seen it work wonders. I will say that i haven't seen one be used on a something as small as a yorkie but it will probably still work just as well. |
I use the one that goes around the legs and am very happy with it. |
I have experience with the head collar variety. I highly recommend this as a training tool. It's important to directly supervise the dog while it has it on at all times, of course, otherwise they might end up hurting themselves. I also noticed that most dogs will take awhile to adjust to the gentle leader, so using positive reinforcement (treats) to get them to *want* to wear it is helpful. As well as starting with small amounts of time that the dog uses it and then working up to longer periods of time. Overall, I can say I've seen big results in very little time with this. A nice feature with gentle leader is that they will replace a *damaged* (code for chewed/destroyed) collar for only a few dollars. Nice to know when they cost $25 or so. Have you asked your vet what s/he thinks would work best for your dog? |
I have the Gentle Leader head collar for Tink. It's amazing. She pulled so hard on a regular leash and harness that I couldn't walk her. She calms right down with this one. She isn't particularly fond of the piece across her nose, but once she stops pulling, she doesn't mind it. |
I used the Gentle Leader to train my German Shepherds but did not use it for Lucy. She was very easy to train. |
I used the gentle leader on my collie and it was amazing! But I'm not sure how it would work for a yorkie..... |
