Seperation Anxiety Duncan is 13 weeks old and I keep him in a wire cage while I am gone. He goes crazy when I put him in there before I go to work. Yesterday I had to take Bo to the vet to check his tonsils (lack of) after they were removed and while I was gone I put Duncan in his cage. When I came back he had vomited and I am worried about him having seperation anxiety. When I am home he is with me all the time. Even when he is trying to nap. He just follows me from room to room and sleeps. The vet tech said to try Rescue Remedy and the vet said he may have to give him something stronger. What could that be and does this last forever? Anything else I can try? I am worried about the young man. He seemed really upset that I left with Bo and didn't take him too? |
I'm going through the same thing with my Chicle .. what i find works is u leave him an article of clothing that u just wore... that way he smells you while u are physically not around ... gl .. would liek to know what how he does.. . |
Thanks. I will do that and let you know. He has been tearing up everything I leave in the cage. I cannot even leave food or water because he spills the water and the food is more outside the cage then in by the time I get home. |

You have taught Ducan that being put in the wire cage = you leaving. Here some suggestion you may want to try: 1. Feed him in his crate 2. Put him in his crate for 5 second and if he behaves, reward him. Increase time in crate as he is more comfortable with it. 3. Put the crate in the same room as you are in and put him in it. 4. Give him something to chew or play with that he likes but only gets in when he is in the crate. What you are doing is trying to disassociate "crate=leaving" also establish crate is a safe place to be. |
totally agree with what yorkieagility... I SECOND THE MOTION! |
My Codie suffered SEVERE seperation anxiety. So I ended up getting my Katie, which I was planning on doig anyway. It seemed to solve all my problems because they're both SO happy to have each other! |
This is how I cured my Katia of separation anxiety. While she was caged(I use a lifestages cage) I would cover it up. This is while we were home. She would know we were there but she couldn't see us that well. Of course she whined but it took about a week for her to lose all of her separation anxiety and her whining is very minimal. She used to get diarhea and pee in her cage and bark non stop when we had to leave her. Now she does none of that. |

Well said, yorkieagility! |
I am going to give it a try. Sounds like it will solve the problem. Thanks alot. |
Separation Anxiety I've been having problems with Zeus having separation anxiety too. My puppy trainer suggested the booklet, "I'll be Home Soon!" by Patricia B. McConnell. It was great!!! Zeus is not all better yet, but improving. They have it on Amazon, $7. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=UTF8&v=glance Good luck, Jessica |
Thanks. I just ordered the book. |
Gucci loves her crate, what I have done from the begining is to leave the crate door open and have it in my laundry room. I gated the doorway and this is her room when she goes to bed at night and while I am out. I leave the pads and her water outside the crate. When I am going out I tell her good girl go into crate and I give her a treat. That is her clue.. and she obeys...During the day if I am home she stays upstairs in my kitchen with me... Try this it may work, just a suggestion.. Good Luck! Gina |
