Training for a Dog Show Has anyone done a dog show or trained for a dog show? Can I get some heads on tips please? I need to train Bandit for the show and I dont know where to begin. He is good with sit, stay, wait, come, lay down, shake hands, bring this or that, but bad with barking at people and other dogs. I have no done stacking yet, he is good with being touched TO a point that is he will turn 9 months at the end of this month. I think I should begin now and need to learn some techniques. If anyone has insight please post here. I am not a breeder nor will I become one, but I do want to enter him. he has all the criteria for that at this time and his teeth was the last, they are now a perfect scissors bite, weight, height, legs, head all in tact, two nice big testies. All I need now are some training tips as to what I must do. He will be entered as a breeding prospect and I would like to have him classed as such, just in case down the line I want one puppy from him. Thanks ladies and Gents |
Training for dog show There may be confirmation classes being held by your local dog club or community center. Check first with the local dog club, they can probably help you locate classes |

I would also start by putting him on a table and allowing him to get used to stacking on the table first...that is the hardest thing to teach them, b/c they have to stand still for the judge...so if you can start with just putting him on the table and stacking him yourself and use the commands that you want him to know (I say "Stand/Stay"). Make sure you go slow with him, let him get used to being on the table and then start stacking him and holding on to him for a few seconds and then praise him. Just remembr lots of praise after every training time, you want him to be excited about showing. Once they learn the stack on the table it is so much easier to learn on the ground. This is probably the most important part to start with in my opinion b/c it lays the foundation for everything else!! If you have any handling classes in your area, those are the best!! You can lots of tips on how to help get your little one used to the ring, plus you get to meet other breeds and handlers that you can learn from!! |

Stack on table? Use a little treat and hold right in front of his nose....do not let him have it though.......until he does what you want......of course you may want to be firm when you tell him......not soft and sweet.....at least, it works for me..... :) Shirley |
Check out your local kennel clubs and see if any of them offer handling classes. I think that would be a big help for you both. And good luck!:) |
