Nocturnal accidents
 

My two little Yorkies are 2 and 3 yrs.old and are (for the most part) housetrained. Except for during the middle of the night, one or both??:confused: will have an accident somewhere in the house. I have always had dogs (although these are my first Yorkies) :aimeeyork and every one of them has awakened me by getting in my face, kissing, whining ,something, IF they needed to go out in the middle of the night. But not these two. I've tried everything. They sleep in the bedroom with us...I tried closing the door...they just go in the bedroom. I've even been awake and heard and caught them and taken them outside immediately. They go out at about 11:00 pm every night and out at between 6:00-7:30 in the morning. For the most part this isn't a huge issue and it's not like it happens EVERY night...I'm just perplexed as to how to "train" them to wake me up. As I said earlier, my other babies just "knew" to do it. I'm a quasi light sleeper and it wouldn't take much for them to wake me. They scratch the back door when they want out during the day...but they don't bother at night. A few weeks ago...I put bells on the back door to hear IF they would scratch...I was awake and heard my little girl Brockty, jump off the bed and tear down the hall. She went nowhere near the back door, but peed in the livingroom instead. :mad: Strange little furballs. Other than this and a few other minor quirks :D ...they are perfect little angels. Any ideas?

What time do you stop letting them drink water, their bladders are small and can not hold a lot, if they are drinking late at night that could be part of the problem. You also might want to have the carpet deep cleaned in the bedroom to get rid of any left over odors remember they smell things we can not. Once the carpet is cleaned I would try going back to beginning training. If you used a crate at night put them back in it over night. They will eventually get it. Good Luck

You might want to think about a playpen with pee-pads for the nighttime. thats what i have setup and it works great.

Both of my girls have been sleeping with us every night since it turned off cold they were both doing so great @ not having accidents I don't let them have water or food after 8:00 but I forgot to take their bowls up 2 times this last week and Tia my 6 month old has peed on me both times :rolleyes: I'm setting an alram to remind me to put up the bowls @ 8 from now on . Middle of the night laundry & showers are no fun. Hope this helps you out

Wish I had some expert advice, but I don't. Both my girls sleep with us and if they stand up, I know it immediately as I'm such a light sleeper. This is the only signal they give that they need to potty. Unfortunately, my two regularly get up in the middle of the night to potty. This is with them eating dinner at 5:00pm and having them potty before we go to bed also. Sometimes, they even get up a 2nd time:eek: !!

But at least we use washable pee pads now, so I don't have to take them outside.......

Sounds to me that there have been some very reasonable suggestions here---alarms, piddle pads, re-crating, removing water early, deep cleaning. Again, very reasonable and workable. Joanne :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :dog:

Sorry to be replying so late, but we've been out of town. Thanks for the replies. As for water at night, I had thought about that initially and am going to start taking water up at night to see if that curbs it some. I hate to do this, as a human, I wake up thirsty in the middle of the night sometimes and would hate to not be able to get a drink. :p
Also, I have a carpet shampooer and do the floors regularly.

This hasn't been a major issue and as I said it's not EVERY night, just that when it happens it's frustrating. It's funny that if I awaken or move and one has to go...then they "tell me" but if I'm asleep they do nothing. And I AM EXTREMELY easy to awaken. I wake up if they jump off the bed to lie on the chairs and when they get off the chairs to come back to bed. They tend to alternate during the nights sometimes.

Just something I may have to live with.
