Ok maybe I'm not a yorkie person... or maybe Addie just is a bad little dog. I've had a few dogs in my life time, mostly German Shepherds or mixes of them, and I've never had a dog as bad as she is. She took twice as long to potty train (which i expected when I did my research on them), and I've gone through two trainers with her already. She barks all the time no matter if I tug on her leash, hold her mouth, yell, shake a can at her, or put her citronella spray collar on. It's miserable. I'm at the point that i just don't want to take her out anymore. I'm tired is being humiliated that she isn't in control. |
So sorry that your feeling that way... I know it can be frustrating trying to get them trained. And they're so cute, but one has really got to have a lot of patience to deal with this breed. Hope all works out for you.... |
Small dogs take longer to house train....some more than others. Some yorkies are barkers. I have two...one barks and one does not. Maybe because his sister does all the barking for him. :rolleyes: I don't know. Do you reward Abby when she doesn't bark? As in...she barks, you tell her her no bark...does she stop if only momentarily? That's the time to reward her...praising her verbally and with treats for her "good" behavior to your command. |
This is going to sound strange, but when Spike barks, it's typically because he wants attention. I have simply started to ignore him when he barks so he learns that that is not the way to get me to pay attention to him. Surprisingly it works a lot faster than me doing things to try and stop him barking, like saying 'no', putting my hand over his mouth, etc.. Once he stops barking, i wait a minute or so, and then he gets lots of praise and attention. I was also told that a good way to stop them from barking is actually to teach them to 'speak', or bark on command. I haven't tried this, but apparently it teaches them to only bark when you ask them to. I try and remember, though, that he is a dog, and as a result he will bark. Once I accepted that barking is typical dog behavior, and acknowledged that there are certain things that most dogs will bark at, I find I'm a lot less stressed!! |
Mine Too... Hey, don't feel bad. I have a male, one year old last week and he didn't start barking until about 5 months. He hasn't stopped. If someone comes to the door, it is all out chaos and quite embarassing. Nothing works to shut him up. I now have a 4 month old female yorkie and she is a bit quieter but I think he's going to teach her a few bad habits. Have been told by many that 2 yorkies are better than one because they need so much attention but right now, with her peeing so freely, I don't know. I'm almost ready to send them both packing. Their only defense...cuteness! |
Thank Goodness Roxy doesnt bark too much... lol. Only when I am making food and she sits their and watches... it makes her mad she isnt having any ... so she barks at me and kicks her legs in the air.. Its so adorable!!! She still has "potty" problems once in a while tho :rolleyes: thats why we put the diapers on her, makes our lives easier :D And she's usually not too bad about it which means I only use a diaper a day :D |
Welcome to owning a yorkie. Boo just stopped barking at everything about 4 months ago. It was frustrating at time but I have had 4 yorkies and knew it would end sooner than later. |
Rocco is almost 4 years old and he barks at everything! I have tried everything short of a bark collar with no luck. It can really grate on your nerves some days. :mad: I'm trying the pennies in the can again.:rolleyes: |
We are struggling with this issue as well. Pookie thinks she has to bark at every noise she hears, and she evidently has really good hearing. It started with barking when the t.v. made certain sounds (mostly drum beats - go figure), now it's dogs in other neighborhoods barking, racoons in the greenbelt behind the house, sound of any door opening or shutting and even when there is nothing but she goes out to potty. She has a loud penetrating bark. We tried the pennies in a can which worked for a while, but now she's over it. Lately we've taken to leading her outside on her leash to potty and when she barks, she gets a little jerk on the leash which stops her. Maybe we should try teaching her to "speak" and see how that works. |
Sorry your feeling the presure if the barker, I myself have barkers to, It can be very fursterating at times, I can yell and do the can thing, they dont listen, so what i have started to do, I let 2 out at a time now, they come in and the other 3 go out, I worry iam causing noise for my neighbors, it does not mean your not a yorkie person:) im sure your a good mommy;) |
Yorkies are one of the toughest breeds because they are so smart and stubborn. For barking the coins in a can have been helping me. My baby is scared of the can! Everytime I pick it up she stops barking and runs away. |
