sniffing Hi, does anyone have any advice on sniffing. Milo is a really big sniffer, when we go on walks, he must sniff everything, like he is getting the news of the neighborhood. I have tired to use food to motivate him, the problem with that is when he sees the food he thinks it is a treat and sits down like I taught him. He walks on a Gentle Leader chest harness, any suggestions on how to keep the head up and moving forward on our walks. I would like to walk a little longer with him, but with him sniffing everything it takes too long. Thanks :) |
Gentle Leader is a wonderful tool, don't you think? I have had the occasion to walk large breed dogs using a regular collar and leash and also with the gentle leader collar. What a difference! It's like night and day! lol Anyhow, I seem to remember my friend raving about the gentle leader DVD saying it showed how gentle leader greatly improved efficiency of training sessions because it controlled the head of the dog. Perhaps you could begin training your dog to heel using the gentle leader? This might teach your dog not to sniff so much? It's natural for them to sniff but if it is adding significantly unnecessary amounts of time to your walks, you may wish to begin heel training. |
My new puppy always sniffs..I dont know if he is just getting used to the place or if he really needs to go potty? |
lol.. it's the breed :) they are ratters (well a long time ago) so to have nose to the ground always sniffing seems to make sense :) Layla is ALWAYS sniffing on a walk.... while we might not go fast i know she is loving every minute of it! She is also a digger... if we have blankets on the couch she will dig in them... also just part of the breed :) |
