Older dog guarding food bowl We brought our second yorkie into our home Xmas weekend. They get along well 80% of the time. We used to free feed Bruno but we are trying to be better and put them on a schedule now to make it easy for going to the bathroom. Problem is - every time we put the food down now Bruno - the older and first dog, guards the food bowl and does not let the new pup - Reggie by. I try to split the food and put it on opposite ends of the kitchen but Bruno will go to the bowl that Reggie tries to eat from to guard it. It was amusing the first day because he literally paces back and forth like a soldier but it has not stopped and I don't know what to do. Anyone else have this problem? |
When I only had 2 dogs, the older one would hurry through her food while guarding the younger one's bowl also. I ended up just feeding one at a time - the alpha female first - and then removed her from the room and let the other one eat. Funny, now that I have 3, everyone can eat in the same room at the same time without problem:rolleyes: |
We feed ours separately and put Jewels up on the table bench to eat so Chachi cant get to her food |
thanks :) i guess i will have to take bruno out.. he is definitely the alpha dog.. i think he even bosses me around subconsciously - i KNOW this is not good but it happens :) my baby owns me! |
My sister and her dog spend alot of time with us in the summer and what worked for me was everytime Milo growled I picked up the food, made him sit and watch the other dog eat. When the other dog was done eating I gave him his food. After a few days he learned not to growl. |
