Nipping
 
My yorkie is 1 yr 2 months old and neutered. For the last two weeks he has nipped at people when the try to scold him for something he did. My daughter (14) points her finger at him and says no and he tries to bite her and growls. Also my boyfriend went to pick him up and he turned around and snapped at him. he has not done this to me at all. Is he becoming a one person dog or is this a stage that will pass? I need help because I do not want him nipping at people.

Citronella (sp.)

Chloe had a nipping problem and we just sprayed her with some citronella from her bark collar whenever she did it. Habit went away VERY fast. Right now especially after being fixed the dog is in a desperate attempt to re establish dominance in the pack.

So once he realizes he is not the dominant male in our pack he will quit? I just do not want him biting one of the little ones I watch. I will try spraying him and see if that works.

It should help. A lot of bad traits from dogs is based on pack hierarchy. Many dogs think they are in charge and in there natural environment when a lead dg feels threatened they will nip, bark, and act aggressive. When they do that you need to let them know that you are in charge. There is a fine line though between dominance and aggression on the human part. Remember the best thing to do is a stern but not aggressive No, than if it continues you spray the dog. If the dog at that point submits to your actions let him know that you appreciate it. Best thing I have found especially with males is, No, spray, once the dog submits ill then call the dog over, praise him for submitting and than go on my way. Dogs need leadership and when they feel there is no leadership in the pack they will do whatever they can to establish it, even at the expense of there family. Just remember that he's not being "mean" or "bad" he's just trying to establish his place in the family.
