How do you teach NO without spanking They are so little you cant pop their hiney, so what are some suggestions on getting their attention when saying NO doesnt always do the trick? |
An altoids can with a few coins in it works wonders at my house.:p I just give it a couple quick shakes and they stop in their tracks! You can also use the spray bottle filled with water trick. A little squirt helps a lot too. Good luck! |

The serious, deep, stern MOM voice. He knows this is the- I'm not messing around voice. Gets his attention. |
I clap my hands loudly together and that always gets Tika's attention. The great part is that you don't have to look to find an item (water bottle, coins) and your "noise maker" is always with you ... your hands. |
I have always just used a very STERN voice when saying "NO NO!" - I used to also sometimes clap my hands if they weren't listening well while telling them no. I don't have to do the clapping anymore as they now listen with just a "NO NO..." - every once in a while I will have to do the loud clapping with Tatum because she can be a little brat  :p lol, but for the most part, I don't. I used to also shake my finger at them while saying "NO NO!" in a very stern voice...and I don't know why, but that also seemed to help :p |
Yeah I do the clapping and say NO very stern, but when I point my finger, she barks at it and wants to bite my finger, lol, she is funny to be so little. So when I point it is like she gets mad, but :D I cant let her get away with this, its so hard not to laugh at them. |
A very stern NO and a shake of the finger. He will get the message after a couple of times, hopefully. As they get older they respond well to these types of authority. Keep with it and you will get the results eventually. |
A snap of my fingers and a firm "NO" will usually do the trick for me. Once they have stopped I will usually get him a bone or something yummy to chew on. I think alot of times they are just looking for something to do. I have a large basket full of bones and toys. When I see Snickers with my childrens toy I just tell him to get his own toys and he will go to his basket and get something. I do have to check under the sofa from time to time and look for missing (stolen by Snickers) things. Also Snickers has this rubber toy the shape of a small football with little holes in it that you can stick treats in. He just loves this thing a takes it everywhere with him. You can get one of those things put some cheese or something in it to keep him out of trouble. |
A firm No! or eh eh and she gets it, but it seems to go over too harsh and I'm trying not to be so STERN! She is such a good baby we really don't getting into too much at least not yet. It's the pooping...where ever...Geesh! |
I clap my hands when I say NO. Dogs understand the tone of your voice, and the disapproving look. that is how dogs communicate. They might even think a pop on the butt a playful gesture. A;lthough a quick touch as you say the word will also startle them and distract them. |
I use the mommy voice as well. Its a deeper tone than my regular voice and telling her NO firmly, always works :) |
When I say a stern No to my 3, this seems to make them worse. :D . Mine just love to ignore me. LOL. I think i'll try the water spray though. The barking is getting outta control. Well I guess they should have been named yorkshire terrors. |
I also just use a firm "NO" and they seem to get it. We are now at he point where I can call each one of their names and say "go out" and they listen, they stand right by the bedroom door but they are out :p. I can say "come in" to each and they will. I have also banged a wood spoon on a pot and that really catches their attention if they are out of control. I read it here a while back and I have only used it for barking issues (and it totally stopped the compulsive barking fits when someone walks by our door). Sounded a little harsh to me at first but it was actually kinda funny doing it, like a kong. It gets their attention right away. Good luck! :p |
You just have to be persistant and consistant no matter how long it takes, till they finally catch on. Don't do anything that makes them afraid of you. A firm no is best. |
