Cross Training Male Yorkie Hello - need some advice please. I just got little Oscar (male) five days ago. He is eleven weeks old (or young?). He is peeing everywhere in my house, so I have decided to crate him during the day (just today). Because it is cold outside and Oscar doesn't seem to care for the outside when it is cold (and I don't either), I have decided to try to paper train him. (i bought the pads and he just plays with them, the minute I put down the paper, he actually went poo poo on the paper and he did again this am). So the question is: When Spring/Summer rolls around the corner, will it be possible to train him (cross train) to do his business outside? Will he catch on in four months from now? Or are males more set in there ways? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks - Kellie |
I believe he will do fine, but you will need to move his paper, little by little to the door you want him to go out from. You don't move the paper until he is consistent in pottying in each new location. When it gets to the door, you will need to place the paper 1/2 in and 1/2 out and then later with just a little bit left peeking out the door. When he can longer pee on the scrap of paper still peeking out, (hopefully) he will bark or scratch at the door to be let out so he can go. Sometimes, you may have to only move the paper in minute increments, it's barely noticeable that it has been moved. This is to avoid his confusion and to avoid any mistakes he may make. Once he is outside, I would still put the paper out, introducing him to the grass with it. |
I think he'll do fine. It will just take some patience on your side. |
My male yorkie is trainied to go out and in. He prefers out, but if I don't make it home in time, he can't hold it, etc, he will go in on the paper. |
