House Breaking a Yorki Puppy Help please... I just purchased an 11 week old male Yorkie (Oscar) and have had him for only four days. He is peeing and pooping everywhere, despite my efforts of trying to take him outside every two hours to combat this. Doesn't work...also trying the puppy pads, no success... Does anyone have tips for success? I don't understand when he is ready to go potty...I look for the signals, sometimes they are there (running around in circles and sniffing) but most of the time, there isn't any warning and then, before you know it, accident... Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Kellie |
When you get them, they are like a baby, they really don't have much control over their bladders..You need to take him out more than 2 hours, and you need to either take him outside, or use the pee pad, not both, as that's very confusing..I use the pee pads, just my preference. I would put mine on it everytime they got done playing, when they woke up, when they were done eating(with in about 10-15 min), when they got drinks..when they go, I would praise the heck out of them..sounds like he's getting too much freedom..Mine have all been put in the xpen a lot until they learned to use the pee pad..If I would catch them peeing anywhere else(not if you don't see them), I would take and put their nose down by it, and in a very stern voice tell them no, then would take them right to the pee pad..I never had any trouble housebreaking any of them..good luck |
Congratulations on your new yorkie, Oscar. I also got my yorkie, Hercules, at 11 weeks. I have him trained to use a litter box with a pad in it. He was easy to train--about 6 weeks until he really had it down. I brought him to the box every 2 hours. I made him stay there until he tinkled. After he ate, I'd get him to play a bit and take him to the box to poo after about 20 minutes. Then I whooped it up and gave him treats--every time. I still continue to give him treats each time. He is a year old now and rarely has accidents. I would pick if you want him to go inside or outside so he doesn't get confused as to where he is supposed to go. Good Luck! |
Thanks for your message. What kind of litter box training system did are you using? Oscar does NOT care for being outside. He shivers and it's pitiful to watch him freeze. Thank you! |
An 11 week old is just a baby. He needs to be contained to a small area like a crate or X-pen most of the time...not have run of the house. You have to start with a small area and once they are doing well in that are, you slowly increase the space they get to run around. A lot of 11 week old puppies are going to just go when they feel the urge..they don't have a whole lot of bladder control at this stage. You need to take him out much more often that every 2 hours during the day. I usually take my adult yorkie out every 2-3 hours. A small puppy needs to start out going outside every 30 minutes |
trained The first day I got my Louis(10 week old) ..my hubby who has trained dogs for years laid on our king bed for a day (24hours)with Louis (who was 10 weeks old) with 2 peepads and a small dog crate..after that day of watching and showing and guiding our pup to the peepads we put him in a kids play pen with the pads in one corner crate in the other corner along water and food..and Louis never had an accident yet..late night he goes to the peepad on his own and heads back to his crate to finish his sleep..thank god for kids playpens..lol hope this helps xoxox Jodi |
I bought my litter box from Petco. It is a Purina Secondnature Litter Pan and it is around $20.00. I bought a bigger pan because I wanted him to have room to move around when he has to go. I just put a piddle pad in it so it never runs on the floor. I agree with the other posters that Oscar shouldn't have the run of the house until he is fully trained and dependable. My Hercules was always confined to the kitchen or familyroom and watched closely. If we couldn't watch him, he was put in the mudroom with his potty and a gate up. The crate did not work for us. Hercules hated it, he would drool profusely and shake in it, and he almost always pooped in it which created quite a mess for me. I know dogs are supposed to love it, but he never did. I still have it sitting out and he's never voluntarily walked into it yet. I also strongly recommend Nature's Miracle (also at Petco or Petsmart) for when he does have accidents. Spray that on the spot and it will take the smell away. If you catch him having an accident, pick him up and put him in the litter box. Eventually he will catch on to where he is to go potty. Hercules now has the run of our house and I have a second litter box upstairs. For some reason if he was upstairs and needed to go, he wouldn't walk all the way down to his potty. But with the second box, he never has an accident. Be patient, and deligent for the next couple months and you will love the indoor potty system. It really does work like a charm for my family, especially when it is cold and snowy outside.;) |

I have a 12 wk old, just got Saturday. I got her a plastic type ex pen. She screams and wants out, wants to be with me constantly and when I did try to keep her in it, she just figured out how to get out of it in 1 day anyway. I can't even take her outside to potty right now because of the snow. I am just trying to watch her constantly and when she starts to squat I pick her right up and pop her on a pad. ? |
I think 11 weeks old is a bit yet to expect a yorkie or any dog for that matter to be potty trained. Best advice I can give is just continue to be consistant. Also, 2 hours is a bit much for ANY pup to hold his or her stuff. I'd try taking him or her out every half hour and when he or she catches on and starts doing better, put more time in between the time you take him or her out to the potty. Best of luck to you. |
Potty I have a 16 week old baby girl. it is cold here and we have snow. Chewy has a pen out side. So he uses that but Sadie is too young to go out side. So I got a used play pen and stuck it in our basement. I put pee pads in and I take her there.... I try to shoot for every half hour to hour. Any time she eats she has to go..(sometimes she will go in the middle of a meal!) She knows this is potty and most times goes fairly quickly. The one problem I have is that she isn't holding it when she is upstairs in the house. I watch her closely but we have our accidents. I know she has some control because when we go out she holds it until we get home! And she holds it all night. But while shes playing she forgets. I am not a fan of the pee pads. People on here have told me to make sure there is a pad for her but she just chews it and drags it around. I have read that you have to make one spot the potty and stick to it. They know what to do and they don't fool around when they are in potty!!!! We are working on it too so you have plenty of company!!!! Chewy is fully potty trained and so there is hope for us all!!!;) |
Funny, I have a dog named Oscar...looks just like that... |

You've gotten some great advice so I just wanted to say welcome Kellie :) |
Thanks Kathy - My lil puppy is doing much better with the housebreaking now! HE doesn't like the puppy pads, but prefers paper. I also take him outside, that seems to work as well. It seems like he doesn't want to go outside. I heard that until he gets "fixed" he will probably have accidents. Not sure how true that could be, but that is what the vet said. He is intelligent and knows how to fetch, sit and stay. didn't take long! Kellie |
Sure seemed like a kid!! Pretty funny, someone stole my dog's identity!! How many Yorkie's are named "Oscar"... |

Please see my prior post, I'm just a baby and it's embarrassing to have accidents when I know I can do better and it's even more embarrassing to read about it where the whole world can see it. Anywayz, I see that from the outfit in your avatar you have no idea what the word "humiliation" means. |

Oh Oscar, I'm sorry you are having accidents. Maybe your mommy doesn't take you outside enough to do your business. Hey Oscar, since you can type fairly well, esp. for a four month old Yorkie, why don't you type your Mommy a note? |

They should NEVER have access to the house while in training. If they have mastered the pad in a few months, then let them play more often in a gated kitchen area without any rugs, Just a pad down. If they continue to go on the pad, then let them have that area days but continue letting them sleep in the crate at night with expen still attached. I never closed the crate door on mine. It may take up to a year before they are ready for more freedom in the house, but with you walking right behind them each time for a month or more just to make sure they don't decide to mark "thier" new space, but to find their way back to the pad. Take them outside every hour or two during the house training period, for more exercise and obedience training. In the evenings we put them on the sofa with us with a chew bone for them and to let them know it isn't play time. They have caught on quickly that TV time is quiet time. It works. I always took them out every hour during TV time to let them run out the energy and potty. When I had to go somewhere and couldn't take them, I would play the solo harp music. This type of sound really calms them. I guess that's all I can think of to tell you how I do things. :D |

I'm never too busy for you, Oscar. I could not see attachment Oscar. |
I have a four month old, trying to crate train him, but at night i leave him with a pad, which is not working well since he goes on or off the pad, but during the day he does pretty good, i have been taking him out of the crate for little stretches at a time, we had one accident, but he is coming along.:animal36 |
