Peeing In Bellybands!! Hi Ladies: Haven't been around much, but I'm not a new member.......My problem is this......I started using bellybands for a year or so now, and they work great for my Miko not peeing inside the house or marking his territory. But he pees alot on the bellybands (I put a sanitary napkin inside the band) and he smells like pee all the time now, I have to replace the pad about 2 times a day sometimes. He goes outside fine, but as soon as i put the bellyband on inside, in the next couple of hours or so, it will be very wet. The bad part about this is that sometimes, I can't even stand for him to be around me, because he smells so much. I'm so frustrated, he's 3 years old now, and he still has potting training issues. He's not neutured. At his age, do you all think that would eliminate some of his potty issues?? |
Neutering him at this age may or may not help with his marking. But neutering is always beneficial anyways so I recommend it. Neutering may very well stop his marking and you won't have to wear a belly band on him anymore but it is not for certain. With my boys I have them shaved on the underside. I put a thick pad on their bellyband and the pad is scented so it helps with the smell alot. Then when I change them I wipe them down with some scented baby wipes to make sure I got all the pee off of them. I also use a femine spray that smells like baby powder that I will spray on their band. It is alot of extra work doing all of this but it keeps my boys smelling fresh and clean rather than smelling like pee all the time. |
I don't really have a problem with my boy smelling in the belly bands. I wash him when I change the pads, but I also change the pads every 90 minutes to 2 hours. Unless of course he has been asleep, but I always check him to make sure he is not wearing a wet pad. I sure wouldn't want an infection or sore skin from the pee. |
I would make sure you are cleaning his area everytime you take his belly band off...this will help to prevent infection and that bad odor!! Our boys where belly bands most of the time and we find that the pee in them sometimes but for the most part they don't like to be in them if they are wet. It took Captain a while to get used to wearing it without peeing it but with some rewards when he didn't pee in it he is now doing great!! |
Cozmo will be 2 in Jan. We just got him neutered about 1 1/2 mons ago. He is a marker. He also use to go in his belly band. Since neutered he hasn't been going in the band. I use the poise pads for people that have problems with there bladder. It doesn't smell like when you use pads. I also wipe him off when I take off. But the Neutering has helped alot. |
thanks ladies, I'm seriously thinking about having him neutered. I do wipe him down with a Wipey after he pees but after a few pees in it...it starts stinking. I will look into the poise diapers, since I have to use so many I'm trying to find a cheaper route and that's why I buy woman's super absorbent sanitary napkins. Thanks for all the suggestions:) |
The Poise pads are actually not really much more expensive than the pads and they work WAY BETTER. Though I wonder if people think I have a bladder control problem when I buy them :D. I have the same problem with smell though and short of shaving the hair off the back end (which is what I think holds the smell), I am working on a belly band that will cover the pad inside as well and is moisture resistant all but the area right where it's needed, so the overflow won't work it's way up around and onto his side hair. Hopefully this will work. If you are interested let me know. |

I will let you know when I get my first ones done. |
changing often enough If you're only changing hime 2 x a day no wonder he stinks. I change my guys every 2 hours if they are wet. I use super sanitary pad from walmart (their brand) The incontience pads are MUCH more expensive. I have 3 guys in bellybands. My daughter's dog was just neutered a month ago at 1 year of age and it has helped a small amount with the marking but not much. |

Thank you for the response and yes please let me know if you design something else I'd be eager to try something different. And for the person that said change every two hours, I'm sorry but I'm way too busy to be changing that often or can I afford a ton of pads a day, but I'm glad that works for you:) |
I buy walamrt brand with wings - $3.27 for 36. They work great. But I just bought the POISE brand to try for my heavier pee 'ers and they are more $$$ BUT they work better. They hold more pee and seem to pull it away from their skin. So I'm gonna use both. The poise brand for my 2 heavey pee 'ers and my walmart brand too. |

As for the urine smell...have you tried self rinse....or wiping them with baby wipes when you change the pad. |
Are you guys using these for marking only, or because you only want them to pee outside? My dog does not wear a belly band, and he does not mark in the house. When he needs to go outside, he comes to get me, and I live in a condo. If I am not home, then he is trained to go on the paper if he has to. I don't understand this concept of keeping them in belly bands all day? |
I used sanitary napkins before to.....use a small baby diaper instead. Don't unfold it, place it sideways, and place bellyband around it. Also if you dont want to do the diaper thing...try baby powder in the napkin before you put it on him... |
