Introducing the Leash I have a 10 week old puppy (it's my Diva's puppy), who has been introduced to going outside. At first, it was just taking her outside to let her frolick in the grass with Diva & Foxxy. Now she's ready to explore & go a little further...so I put a harness on her & was going to take her just down the sidewalk a little...well she would not budge...I didn't want to pull or drag her but as soon as she would start walking & felt that she was on a leash, she stopped & would either sit there or just look at me. So after a few minutes of that, I just brought her back in the house. I figured I'd do that a little each day until she got the hang of it but was wondering if anyone else has suggestions or other ways of starting a puppy off with walking. |
I had a Bichon like that years ago, he learned to love the leash as he knew it meant a walk. What I did was leave the leash attached, and then he would drag the leash inside the house. That is what seemed to scare him, but he learned the leash wasn't bad when it was with him and pretty quickly he easily went with me when I walked him |
My 16 week old girl is having some problems training a lot of things. She just sits and tries to bite the leash. How can I get her to walk with me on the leash. |
Begin by keeping them tethered in the house with the leash and harness. Use an old/inexpensive leash, one you don't mind them chewing up, because they will. Then, start letting them drag the leash around the house. Once comfortable with that, start with the walking with the leash. Use a treat to coax. If they stop and freeze, give a gentle pull, drag them a bit and they will start walking. This is not mean and it really does work. Most important, give lots of praise when they tolerate the leash and when they walk with the leash. Something else helpful is to take them to watch other dogs walking on a leash. At first Holly was not to keen on the idea, but as soon as she saw Gracie walking on the leash, she of course had to follow in her big sister's foot steps! |

Thanks ladies for the advice/suggestions. I'll try it. I see a lot of dogs that get excited when they see the leash and I want mine to do the same. I do let take them outside in the yard and just let them run free sometimes so I thought that may not be helping the situation. Maybe I shouldn't do that as often until they've become used to leash walking.. |
Thanks for this post I wouldn't let him outside until he was done with his shots and now I feel like he doesn't know what to do when he is outside. I will try and do some of these things to to try and get him used to his leash. As he freezes right when I put it on him. |
haha Boo did the same, until i used human food and a lot of motivation for him to follow me with the leash |
