Has your yorkie had serious health problems? We will be bringing home our new puppy sometime in February, I am just curious how many of your yorkies have had serious health problems. I am quite aware that owning a yorkie will include some hefty vet bills and I'm already looking into pet insurance but after talking with my sister-in-law who owns two boxers, it doesn't seem these pet insurance companies cover a lot of the health problems that are common in certain breeds. After some reading, it looks as if hypoglycemia, liver, and teeth problems seem to be the most common. My boyfriends mother says time after time.... don't get purebred! They have too many health problems. Eeeerrr! |
The key to getting a healthy yorkie is buying from a reputable breeder. I can't stress that enough. My yorkie came from a puppymill, and yes, he has very serious liver problems. He needs to be on a special diet, lactulose, and supplements for the rest of his life. I was tricked by a woman who pretended to be a reputable breeder...She had all the right answers to my questions, and I was naive at the time...I found out later when my yorkie started having all of his health problems that she was actually a broker for puppymills!! Yorkies are wonderful little dogs!! :) There's nothing wrong with buying a purebred :) Just make sure whatever dog you buy comes from a reputable breeder who does health testing. |
Winston has hypoglycemic/seizure issues...which can be dangerous if not treated properly, I just wish I could prevent them in the first place. Otherwise he is happy and healthy and yes, he came from a reputable breeder...thank goodness. |

Make sure you only deal with a breeder who does genetic screening and health testing of all her breeding dogs. Doing your homework now to find a good breeder can save you heartbreak and money in the future. Liver shunts are a terrible problem in Yorkies. According to a recent study by Dr. Tobias at the University of Tennessee, Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have liver shunts than all other breeds combined. http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs/shunt/faq.shtml Dr. Tobias and Dr. Center (Cornell) are considered the authorities on liver disease. Dr. Center recommends that all puppies get a bile acids test before going to their new home. According to Dr. Center, sixteen weeks is the ideal time, but have your breeder do it as close to departure time as possible. A reputable breeder will know what genetic problems can occur in her breed and be able to discuss the subject with you. Ask her what steps she has taken to make sure they don't occur in her puppies. A reputable breeder will welcome your questions. If she has no idea what you are talking about or is evasive, run! You can look up the inherited problems in Yorkies here: http://www.vetsci.usyd.edu.au/lida/index.php?Pg=2 |
I also wanted to mention that most pet insurance companies will not cover problems like liver shunt. |

They are the top two health issues with the breed, too, so make sure you find a breeder who screens the parents for both! |
I've not had any health issues.................YET! But he is only two years old and I bought him from an individual that bought him from a breeder........not sure if it was a reputable breeder or not! Just keep hoping he stays healthy. |
Cali had and has serious health issues but I did not do myhomework before I got her. (pre YT). SO I got Pixie from a very reputable breeder and just got Dixie from her as well 2 weeks ago. I do have insurance on mine as it does help in a lot of situations. |
You should get pet insurance that covers hospital and major things like broken legs , cancer etc. god forbid those things might cost a lot without it. Maxi is gonna get his insurance when he turns 1 year old :) |
