switching from pee pads to outside... Hello, I just brought my yorkie home a week ago and she is just about 4 months old. The breeder was using the puppy pads to train them and she is pretty good about going on them. She misses sometimes which I do correct, but i would like her to go outside. We have other dogs and they go outside and its so much easier. What is your guys' opinion on how to switch? |
I don't know...... we do BOTH!! The pads are nice for when we travel...... in hotels, and also on the road. (We take a peepad in the gas station bathroom... and bingo! :D )...... It is especially good when it is pouring down rain and the furbutts DO NOT want to go right away... and I DO NOT want to stand out in the rain. |
Dunno... I sware by Meka's puppy pads, though she is kinda cross trained and has no problems going outside if we take her. I think it just came naturally, you know... Also, Welcome to YT :D Cant wait to see pics of your pup :) |
I took the puppy pads away and just started taking her outside. That was when she was a little older and I knew her potty routing. But now I wish I had kept them to some degree because with the cold weather or when it rains, she doesn't like to go out. And I don't want to go out either so I wish she'd go on pads now. :( |
Mine use both! I have a doggie door, but when the weather is bad or cold they use the pads. Also nice when I have to be gone for an extended time period and don't want them going out while I am gone. |
Make a big deal out of it when she is successful on the potty pad, give her a little treat and say "good potty" or whatever? When you have enough success, and feel like she understands, start using that phrase so she learns to potty on command. It's REALLY easy to move them to go outside but not so easy the other way around. I agree that it is wonderful when they will do both. |
I use both as well. Let me tell ya, it's nice knowing the pads are there on a lazy Saturday morning when I don't want to get out of bed at 6:00am to let them out. I would try to just let them out more frequently, but leave the pads down for awhile. Maybe make the pad area smaller and smaller while letting them out more frequently. Good Luck to you. |
Training my new Yorkie I just got my new yorkie a week ago as well. I thought I had a plan all figured out for potty training but it's not working. I feel a little lost. I have been using the pee pads and she has no problem going on them. But when I take her outside she doesn't want to go. She just jumps at my feet and wants to play. I keep saying "go potty" or "go poop" and she will sniff around and then get distracted by a car or the wind. Plus it's cold and I don't want to stay out there for a long time. So, instead of putting her back into her crate I've been putting her into a small bathroom with a bed, food, water, and pee pad. When I wake up in the morning she has gone potty and poop. My question is this: Should I continue letting her just sleep in the bathroom and let her do the deed in there, or should I keep working with her to go outside? I've also liked putting her into the bathroom because then I know that she will eat and not get distracted by the kids and stuff. I'm reading magazines and stuff online but I just need some more advice! Thanks! |

What is your goal? Meaning, where would you like her to end up sleeping and going potty? |
She goes on the pad but when i bring her outside she just sniffs around for a half an hour even when im standing there telling her "go potty." Whenever she does go on the pad, i tell her "good potty" but she just sniffs around. I dont understand, we have other dogs that go outside so there are smells, I have put her pads with pee on them outside to have her go there, and even bought the pheramone drops and put them outside and no dice. another thing is she was doing great on her pads but she is starting to not go on them anymore... I dont understand as soon as she misses i clean it and put natures miracle on it. She doesnt go in the same place but she doesn't like to go. only sometimes. Any advice? |
I took my male yorkie out with our other dogs when it was pee time and he soon caught on by watching them.... Tanya |
