New puppy hates my husband! We just picked up our new little male Yorkie, he is 5 months old. He suddenly wants nothing to do with my husband, who desperately just wants to hold and love and play with him. All our little Sam wants to do is lay on my lap. Is this an adjustment period type of thing? Thanks. |

Yep....... you said that you JUST picked him up. He will take a few days (maybe a week) to check things out and start feeling comfy. Once he does.... I am sure he will welcome all the attention that he can get! :) |
Don't let your husband get discouraged...mine did and he gave up trying...now my boyz are mama's boyz that pretty much want nothing to do with 'daddy'. If he wants him to like him then he has to share in the responsibility of play time, cuddle time and feeding...if he lets you do it all he'll never bond with him. |
Welcome to YT. Have your hubby just keep trying and your new baby will eventually warm up. Maybe hubby can take him for walks (or hunting as my husband says). Where in NM are you from? |
Make sure your husband is involved in his care, feeding him, brushing, walking, etc. so that he will bond with him as well. Congratulations on little Sam! |
It will get better have your hubby give him treats :aimeeyork :D |
Welcome to YT!! We're so glad to have you here! You've come to the right place for yorkie knowledge & all kinds of fun! Your pup will come around, even with my dad, who my yorkies don't see much - we just came to visit them & the yorkies were shy of him at first (no men in my house) - but in a couple days the yorkies are sitting in his lap & sharing kisses. Your pup is still young, time will make the biggest difference. Oh, be sure to sign your new little guy up for our new Little Gentleman's Club - here's the thread to do so: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=gentleman |
Your pup will definitely come around! Bella loves my husband. She is always wanting to snuggle up with him. It just takes awhile! I'm sure as he cares for him, he will understand how much your husband loves him. Maybe he had a bad experience with males???? Good luck and welcome to YT! You will love it here! :) |
On a normal day, I stay up late and get up anywhere from 8:30- 9:30.. My hubby is an early to bed and early riser.:animal36 so this is always good for us, as that is his time to bond with a new puppy, he gets up with them and plays with them and takes them potty.. I let him, for if I did not they would all end up just being my sucks.. I get him to share a lot of things., I just ask him oh can you do this or that. It helps with the baby's. While he is bonding early morning with the baby, I am in bed with the others that are older and just would rather be snuggled to me. This gives him the alone time. Lets face it, the caregiver is the one they will follow. Give hubby some jobs like that, and let him do it, and you either stay in bed a little longer, in no time, that baby will bond with him, make sure he cannot get back to your bedroom, and has to spend time with hubby..:animal36 Hope some of all our advice helps you out. :) Pooh's mum |
Welcome to yt:) he will come around to your hubby;) |
Ruby's mom Hey, I just got Ruby my yorkie a few weeks ago. She is very bonded to me. My husband started to bond with Ruby this weekend. I left to run some errands. By the time I got home, she was cuddling with him. Now they are buddies. So hang in there. Linda:) |
I agree with all the suggestions above...and would add... Give your husband a day to bond with him while you go shopping...or get your own special time. That will bridge that gap of "getting to know each other". Good Luck...I'm sure you'll love having a yorkie as much as the rest of us do. :) Just be careful though...it is rarely possible to have just one. |
The book The Loved Dog is very good and it recamends you have the person they are afraid of to give treats! My new baby is here only a week and she took a few day to warm up! |
thank you all for your words of wisdom... sam is doing much better socializing the more time he spends with us. he seems to be loving both my husband and i now! |
I would say so- you must love him too much;) |
