Transition Question -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok Rudy has been in a playpen during times that we are gone since coming to us but I am ready to transition him to a room .. I am thinking the kitchen.. what I need to know from all of you is how I need to prepare it .. ie.. rugs.. chairs.. etc.. i plan on leaving his bed food water toys place to potty but my concern is chewing.. on cabinets etc.. please advise.. i also plan to leave him for short times in the beginning.. 1 hr - etc.. thanks so much.. |
1) Make sure you introduce him to the new space while you are there. 2) You should practice on the weekend. Pretend to leave in the new situation. See what mischief he gets into in the brief time you're "testing" 3) Make sure cabinet doors are closed good and that no chemicals or bad stuff is within reach. Remember, they're crafty buggers. 4) I'd make sure the food/water/toy area is the same place 100% of the time. Ff he has separation anxiety or a desire to chew ... you'll have problems. By testing, you can decide if he's ready to be on his own. |
When we first got Meka she used a playpen....Then we moved when she was 3 mo's or so. We transitioned her to be in our washroom area downstairs. Its like a little room and it was blocked of by a baby gate. She had her food/water bowls on one side, with toy box & bed...then the other side has her pee pads... she did fine, though at first she would get up daily at 4 or 5 am and bark for me to come get her. She's 9 mo's now and she sleeps in our room, in her bed that's next to my bed... she has to go downstairs to her area to use the bathroom and eat/drink, but she's been doing well with sleeping through the night now... So I would suggest blocking off area's that you dont want him in, with a gate. Definately designate a spot for his pads and water bowl (should always be the same spot) and always talk to him firmly about what he cant do in the new space... Hope this helps :) |
