Puppy Boot Camp??? HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!!!! Trixie is 5 months old and she's just not getting the potty training thing. We take her out every hour on the hour and she pee's every time however, after we bring her back in she'll find some other place in the house to go. I know she can hold it, she's in her crate at night from 10:00pm til 8:00am. We have bought a carpet cleaner and I think that's working because she doesn't go in the same spot twice. We feed her twice a day for 15 minutes and if she doesn't eat it all within that time it gets taken away, so it not like she eats and drinks all day long. We've taken her to puppy training classes and obedience classes but she's still not getting it. I know it's probably my fault she's not potty trained yet but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I am a stay at home mom but I can't watch her every move every minute of the day. My husband tells me we're going to have to get rid of her if she's not potty trained soon. It would be like giving one of my kids away!!! I couldn't do it!!! I found a website for Puppy boot camp called "Chicagodogtrainer.com" I've never heard of it before. Can anyone tell me more about it. I am also afraid if I send her away to camp she will be abused. This camp is suppose to use a method called "ForceFree" they aren't suppose to use choke chains or pinch collars and it's suppose to be a very calm experience for her. They guarantee it. It cost 1,000.00 for 10 days and she's suppose to be fully potty trained and learn a few simple commands. It's expensive but I'm willing to try anything!!!! Has anyone ever sent their Yorkie to camp before???? Can anyone give me some advice about this?   |
I wouldn't do it..at 6 motnhs it is still hard..I would use weewee pads and start crating here WHENEVER you cannot be with her in a gated room (living room, bedroom etc)..take her out for 5 minutes put her on the pad if no pee then back in the crate...do this until she does pee and then give PRAISE and lots of TREATS!!! Maximus was never crated but instead gated in the livign room which has hardwood floors...he caught on very quickly and we are working on the poop now..he is 5 months...where do you live, if I am close I would help train her? |
I would not send her to Boot Camp. If you are a "Stay At Home" mom, then still take her outside on a LEASH to use the bathroom. When you return inside, give her a PP treat. If you can't watch her every move, then keep her confined in an exercise pen, or a room that she will not soil any carpet. With the help of EVERYONE in the household, she will be trained very quicly. She is still considered a baby. I totally agree with you on not wanting to give her away. Just because she wasn't BORN trained in bathroom etiquette, that is NO reason to get rid of her. Dogs DO NOT train themselves. That job is up to the human parents. |
I'm in Plainfield Illinois. We did the potty pad thing and she would sometimes go on there but we had to stop that when we found our 18 month old daughter either sitting on it herself or racing me to pick up the poop. |
Maybe try belly bands when she is inside the house and then when you take her outside make sure she pees for as long as it takse..sorry not much help I live in NY and I use pee pee pads..Maximus doesn't even know he's allowed to pee outside...lol..., he holds it till we get back home to pee on the pad...have you contacted your breeder? |
belly bands are for little boys, training or heat panties http://www.designerdoggie.net/ are for the little gals you can find them on most dog apparel websites. This is only bandaiding the problem but will help in a pinch... You have to be very diligent about training. If you are giving her full run of the house, too much freedom is a bad thing when training. You must take her out first thing in the morning, after feedings, after play time, after naps, just before bedtime. Doing this religiously with patience and praise she should get the hang of it. I wouldnt limit food and water at this young of age, but you can stop water after 5pm nightly to help, providing your dont have active play or exercise or very hot weather. If you do give her water, take her out shortly after. good luck |

There are also doggy diapers. Check out www.petedge.com and/or www.petsmart.com or you can google it. Please don't give up on your baby and get rid of her -- would you expect a 5 month old child to be fully potty trained? Of course not - it takes a long time but you can definitely get there. Please let me know if you need any other info or help. Good luck w/ your baby. :p |
