when can they hold it? My Yorkie is a little over 4 months old, female. Her name is Oprah =) She's really good and after a week of having her she knew she was supposed to go potty outside. She goes to the door -- even at new houses --- however if you don't let her out quickly she will pee/poop on the floor. I know her bladder isn't fully developed yet, is this why she does this? This happens at most 1x a day but it's frustrating cause she knows better and I don't know how teach to hold it and wait for me to let her out. Will this get better? Also, we have communication problems when upstairs. she will usually hold it till we go downstairs, but again -- she does not know how to tell me that she needs to go out when we are upstairs and not near the door... what can I teach her? Any suggestions? Thanks so much! |
Do you give her treats when she goes potty outside? If you don't try that and just don't give her a treat when she potties by the door. Some people hang a bell from the doorknob and teach them to ring the bell. At lease yours go to the door mine gives you the " look". ;) |
You are correct. Their body function muscles are not strong yet. You need to take her out on a leash, more often. We hung a bell on our backdoor knob. When Maggie needs to go out, she rings the bell. I tell her "I'm Coming". She dances while I QUICKLY pick her up, attach her leash and out the door we go. We have a fenced yard, but attaching the leash tells her she needs to hold it until the door is opened. |
I had the same problem with Sophie so I also hung a bell on the door after reading about it on YT. It works great. She will ring the bell and I will say Mommy's coming and she will wait because she knows I am going to let her out. It sounds like she is doing really well for her age. Hang in there you will get through it. |

Oprah sound so cute waiting for the "potty door" to open! OPEN OPEN OPEN!! Usually it is 6 months before they can "hold it" for any length of time. |
4 months old? Unless you are leaving her at the door for hours then she should be able to hold it long enough for you to get ready to take her outside. Perhaps some more training is in order. |
