Barking at Strangers and other Dogs...HELP! I'm new here, and I own a 6-month old Yorkie. He has always been a very sweet and loving puppy, and is great with me, my husband, and my two children ages 3 and 2. He has never growled, snapped, or tried to bite any of us. But, any time we are out and he sees one of my neighbors leave their house or another dog he barks, and barks, and barks like crazy. He really doesn't growl, snarl, or snap, just BARKS! Also, anytime someone new comes over he goes ballistic barking at them. He will calm down after a few minutes of them being in the house and then he acts normally. I'm worried he is developing aggressive tendencies and really want to nip this in the bud sooner rather than later. He has not been neutered yet (will be next month), so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!!! |
Mckenzie is around 10.5 months and she does this also, but she does it out of fear. As soon as she sniffs the other dog or gets used to the people, she'll calm down immediately. I wish I had some good advice but we are still working on this also :) I'm interested to see if anyone else has any opinions as I'd like to know too! Oh, and welcome to YT :)!! |
Welcome to yt, sorry I cant help, i have 4 barkers here to:rolleyes: Welcome to yorkie land:D |
Welcome to YT, I cannot help neither, for I too have 4 barkers, :D if one barks at a dog going down the street, they all come on the run to yip also.  I just keep saying quiet and they are not too bad but under control all the time, in other words my hubby or myself are on the porch with them, :animal36 it is not too big, so easier to control, but let a stranger walk up :( :( to the door, we know someone is coming. :( I love that about the yorkies. pooh's mum |
I am new too. I have two yorkies - 2yrs and 4months and the 2 year old - bruno is a barker the baby-reggie has not started yet but i am sure it is coming.. I have read that it is in their nature to be barkers.. ESPECIALLY at the vacuum cleaner:) ! |
That's funny. My Yorkie doesn't mind the vacuum. I am just worried that his barking is a sign of aggression because if he wasn't on the leash he would be all over the other dog. My husbands family is in town and brought their Pom. He's only here for a couple of hours a day but Sebastian just barks and goes ballistic so I have to put him upstairs. I've been using the clicker and treats for the few seconds that he is quiet. The times that he is quiet are getting a little longer every day, but I don't ever see him getting to the point of just being calm around the other dog. Maybe I just need to give him more time. It's only been a couple of days. Thanks for all your thoughts! Anyone else with advice would be appreciated :). |
Just a note. Yorkies are known to think they are much bigger than they are and nip at larger dogs. The Yorkie handbook I have says that many Yorkies have met their demise because of this attitude. I'm very careful with my Yorkies even though someone says their larger dog is friendly. One of my Yorkies may take a notion to nip, and who knows what the larger dog's reaction would be even if the attacker is an annoying bit of a thing. |
I have read in several places that it is the nature of the breed to protect it's loved ones and I am sure this is what your puppy is doing. As long as you are making sure to socialize your dog I wouldn't worry too much. My 4 month pup too has suddenly developed a new barking sensation. He loves everyone. He is not very discerning when it comes to who gives him love and attention but when he is at home, and he hears the door opening he will stop whatever he's doing (including sleeping),bark and run to the door. He will do this if I go downstairs and come back up after a while because he hears someone downstairs. I think it is quite normal and feel proud that he has this capacity. As long as he is not growling or trying to bite someone, I would not take this as an aggressive behavior. |
I wonder if its equally normal for them to NEVER bark. I have one guy who will bark at the door or a strange noise, but my little Charlie has never barked (I have two yorkies and they are 6 months). Charlie growls when he is wrestling with his brother and makes a funny little noise when he yawns, but has never opened his mouth to bark. |
I had him on a leash in the house and when the family came over he was barking like crazy. But, as soon as they walked up to them he just licked them and wanted to be petted. Guess maybe I was worrying too much. |
I heard that if you put pennies in an empty coca cola or pepsi metal can and shake it they stop barking because they get scared. This tactic might work. I never used it because I trained my baby to be quiet on command :) |
