Bell training I have a bell by the door that I ring........then have the puppy ring.....before we go outside. I say "outside" and then ring the bell. I have done this for 2+ months. How long before she might possibly ring it on her own to go out? Any good hints to make this work. Thanks........Lori |
Did you do any target touch training with the bell before you hung it on the door? Or did you all ways ring the bell for her? |
nO HELP, BUT I HAVE TO LAUGH- bANJO HAS TAKEN 1 THING OFF MY XMAS TREE- A GOLD BELL- AND RUNS AROUND RINGING IT- I CALL HIM MY SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGER!LOL- IF HE WAS NOT SO DARN FAST-I'D TAKE HIS PICTURE- ALWAYS END UP WITH A PICTURE OF HIS REAN END!LOL |
I'm not sure how long it took Venus, but it was over a few months. She finally caught on. Just keep doing what your doing. |
Graysie............What is "target touch training"? I ring the bell, and have her ring the bell........meaning I pick up her paw and make her ring the bell. Lori |

also you may want to teach her to touch the bell first before hanging it on the door.... have her touch it with her nose... then reward her.... and keep doing it untill she starts touching it on her own to get the reward... then hang it on the door and ask her to touch it every time u go outside. |
Keep working on it. Spicy is bell trained and it is wonderful! |
Do you hang it on your door knob? What does this bell look like? I think that I would like to get one for my gang. |
I have a 4 year old Bichon that I taught to ring a bell by the door. I first showed her the bell, which is one of those Christmas bells with 3 or 4 bells that hang on the door knob. I put it at dog/nose height next to the door on a hook. I showed her how to ring the bell with her nose. Then everytime before we went out, I had her ring the bell and I said "lets go outside" or something simmular. It works great and I have many visitors that are surprised when she rings it to go outside. It took her about a month to get the hang of it. I had the bell there from day one but didnt' really work on it till she was about 6-8 months old. Hopefully my new Yorkie will get the hang of it too. |
Well, I plan to continue working on this. I think I need to move it up a bit so she can hit it with her nose. I say "outside" everytime I ring it, and then get her to do it. I figure if she ever does this, it will be worth all the rings! Thanks........Lori |

This is actually a good time to get the bell...I used one that was a Christmas ornament. I tied a cute ribbon from the doorknob to the bell. Then a few weeks ago I saw a bell door hanger at Dollar Tree. It has 5 bells on it and fit right over the doorknob. I think I am going to keep it there because it makes the bells a little louder. We have 3 kids from 3-10 so sometimes you gotta be loud around here to get what you need. ;) |
Playing with the bell Any clue what to do when the dog starts PLAYING with the bell??? |
