Crate training at night? Our yorkie puppy is going to be here in 11 more days. We are so excited:) He will be 11 weeks when we get him, and we are naming him Koda Bear. This is our first puppy, so everything is so new. We will be crate training and using the pee pads for potty training. My question is do puppy of this age hold off going potty all night or do I have to get up in the middle of the night to let him go? If so how often? Thanks |
at 11 weeks he probably will not be able to hold it all night. i kept my puppy in a crate by my bed. The crate was blocked off so she really only had a 1x2 foot area, enough for sleeping and that's it. When she needed to go in the middle of the night she usually made some noise, so i got up, put on her leash, and took her out to potty. i didn't make a big deal when i took her out. just opened the door, scooped her up, didn't say anything, took her outside, told her to go potty, waited...waited until she went, said good girl, then scooped her up, took her inside and put her back in her crate without another word. i didn't want to rile her up so night time wake ups were just about pottying and nothing else. after a week or two she was able to hold it all night until 6/7am |
Yes, I agree with the previous message. Good advice! Good luck with your new pup. Your going to love your new puppy. I am a new member here and my Yorkie is over a year old. There are so many wonderful members who are experienced and willing to help! |
Several member suggested me putting her crate by my bed. That was the best idea I'd found crate training! Since I'm not married, crate went in the bed with me and my other yorkie! I couldn't find a small crate, and the one I got would have been great for 2 yorkies, lol. It came with a divider, and I used that. Much easier to hear them when they wimper to go out, if they are right with you at night. And if they can see you, they are less likely to bark and whine all night wanting company. I took Venus out about 2 times in the night those first weeks. After a while, she'd only wake me 1 time. And yes, crate needs to be blocked off to a small portion. They need to be able to stand up, and turn around in it. If she messed her crate up, we still went straight outside when she woke me. That way she got used to me taking her outside to potty, when she'd wimper. When we got back inside, I'd clean the crate up again. I used old tee shirts in her crate especially since I found she would poo in her bed that first week! Easier to wash, and I had a pile of old tee shirts. Good luck with this. I got a wealth of info from YT members that first year I had Venus. I wish I'd found this board when I first got Adonis! |

Here's my advice on pee pee pads. Try to avoid using them. I used them and had a really hard time geting him to go outside. Also when i would leave him alone he would tare the pads to shreds - what a mess. I even bought the pee pee pads that stick to the floor - he would dig them up from the center. Now Bauer is almost a year old and after a long struggle of trying to switch him from the pads to outdoors, he is finally completely house broken. |
