"Tricks on Command"? Linus will sit for treats, but he won't do it any other time. He knows when you don't have a treat in your hand for him, and if you don't then he won't sit. The only time he will sit without a treat is when he's trying to prove me wrong. Seriously, people ask me if he doesn tricks and I tell him he won't sit without and trick and say "See" and tell him to sit and he does. But other than that, he turns around and walks the other way. But he's great with treats, doesn't ever even hesitate. How do I get him to do it without having to feed him constantly? |
While you are working with him try getting him to sit more than once before giving him a treat. Keep the treats in hand and have him do a few tricks then give him a treat but praise after each trick. Slowly increase the amount of tricks he has to do before the treats. Try to pretty much weed out the treats and substitute them with praise at least with the older tricks and until he learns that he doesn't always get treats. One other thing that I learned in obedience was to only tell them once, I don't know if you are doing this or not. But only tell him sit once and if he doesn't sit you put him into sit. Supposedly they learn that you only tell them once and they have to do it. Maybe some of this will help. Most importantly just keep trying the more you work with him now the better he will be in the future. |

You know, I have always wondered if all of those random things I learned about people like Pavlov would come in handy later in life. Maybe it will just take a little more time. I feel like I've been training him for months now, and he can do anything he wants to when he feels like it, it is just a matter of making him do it when he doesn't! I'll try that and see how it works out! |

My pup will sit with or without a treat. I have taught my pup some tricks without his getting treats. Sometimes, instead of food, I just tell him he's a good boy and give him a hugs and a kisses and make him think it's fun. I think he thinks this is a treat also. Try doing some training without treats - give him other rewards - affection, praise, play with him, etc. Good luck! Carol Jean |
