I need help with leash training I tried to walk my puppy for the first time on a leash today. He really did not take to it! I pretty much dragged him the entire time ( about 20 min.) and then gave up and carried him the rest of the way (not good I know). He had a harness on, so I lifted straight up on the harness to try and encourage him to stand up and walk. His front feet were barely touching the ground and his back feet were dragging as he was in a sitting position (don't worry he was on grass, not concrete). I know he wasn't tired b/c he had just finished his nap and was bursting with energy. He will follow me around the back yard with or without a leash on, but the minite I pick it up, he plops down and refuses to walk. Should I just keep walking him until he gives in and decides to walk with me or will that make him hate the leash? What do you guys think I should do? |
have you tried holding a treat in front of his face to get him to walk on leash? I actually saw this on the dog whisperer the other day. He said to walk the dog next to you not behind you and keep the leash tight straight up and down. if you are walking this way all four legs will be on the ground. If you are in front and pulling him the dog will sit down and put on the breaks, which will not allow you to get him moving. |
yeah, that's how i got my dog to walk. just put a treat infront of them. they start walking and then i give him the treat eventually. |
Yeah, I second (or third or fourth) the motion of using treats and praise. In the beginning, be satisfied with baby steps. If he walks a few steps the way you want him to, treat and praise. Try for a few more steps, and same thing. The secret is to quit on a success, then go a little longer the next day. Once he gets used to the treat idea, hold it between you and him so he looks you in the face to see the treat. It teaches him to keep his attention on your face, not your treat hand. Good luck. |
I had the same troubles at first too! Renji would just sit down and refuse to budge. What worked best for me was practicing first in the house and holding a treat right in front of his face to get him to walk and we would walk very short distances--at first a few steps, then one rotation around the island in my kitchen, and then from the kitchen to the living room. I also kept the sessions super short at first so that way he didn't get frustrated too quickly. It took a good four or five days before he really understood what I wanted from him. Good luck! |
Thanks guys! I will break out my treats tomorrow:D and start slooooowly in the living room or backyard. He had sooo much energy today and a romp in the backyard was NOT working, so I was hoping to just take him on a long walk (yeah right!) I guess that will come later;) |
Besides the treats you could also let him walk around the house for a little bit with the leash attached to his harness so he can get used to it. |
