drop it command I am so glad i found this website everyone seems so nice. What is the best way to teach a yorkie to drop something she shouldnt be playing with. I can reach in her bowl and take whatever i want out of her food bowl, i can take toys away from her. Only when she has something she shouldnt does she growl & snarl and lunge at times. I can take a treat out and tell her to Leave It, and she barks then comes to me to get the treat and i can grab what she has. It seems there must be a better way. |
well you start by using a toy something she can have. when she picks it up say drop it and gently pull it out of her mouth. then reward her. everytime she does it go crazy with rewards!!! then eventually when she has anything say drop it in a very stern voice and she should just let it go. always always always praise her when she does something right. |

thank you we started doing that with her after megan posted, we really appreciate all the info, we love this dog so much. |
i dont say drop it, i say "give" but it works the same, i dont know how i trained him to do it, i just asked him to "give" and if he did it right he would get praise |
well, I'll certainly have to work on this one...!! Gizzie Chavi will "give" anything on command but where on earth did I go wrong with my sweet Gypsy Rose?! If it's a chew or whatever in the house, no problem but in the garden etc (where it's more of a worry obviously, NO chance!) Ana xx :aimeeyork |
