How cold is TOO Cold? Ok I was reading on some post how you shouldn't let your furbaby out when it is raining or too cold... I pretty much get the raining but how cold is too cold? I live in Louisiana I wore shorts yesterday.. today i needed a sweater LOL... If it feels good to me will it be ok for her? Or if i need a seater or jacket should i put one on here or just let her go inside? 9 DAYS TILL SEE COMES HOME!!!! |
Im in Indiana and it gets very cold here and mine go out to go potty. They usually have their hoodies on but sometimes not. I dont take them for walks once it gets colder than 30 degrees |
My rule of thumb has always been if it feels chilly enough for me to wear a sweater/jacket, then they need one too. Also, if it's below 30 degrees, they'll only go out to potty and I won't do the usual long walks. And if it's REALLY cold (single digits), they stay indoors. |
ok i think im pretty set then.. it barely gets below 50 around here only in the early am and late in the pm.. thanks alot.. if i ware a sweater or jacket so will she |
I'm with Amanda on the sweater thing. If I have my winter coat on, they need theres. Rocky's trained to go outside, so I'll take him out but only for a few minutes, until he goes. I don't think he minds the cold..our grass is covered in ice right now and this morning he was walking around on it (even though I cleared some spots so his paws wouldn't be cold) and he prefered walk on the ice. He has a sweater on and I put his coat on too when he goes outside. When we take Bella outside though it's just to the car, and she has a sweater on, a peacoat, and is in the carrier with two blankets since she doesn't have any hair to keep her warm. |

Just use your own judgement and WATCH your baby. Watch for signs she's cold. Shivering, refusing to go out b/c of the temperature. You'll know. :) |
I've also been using that rule of thumb that if I need a jacket, Bitsy needs a jacket. If I wear a sweater, Bitsy wears a sweater... This morning it was -5C (23 F) with no wind chill. I bundled myself up and Bitsy wore her fleece jogger with a jacket on top and we walked for 30 minutes. She didn't shiver once and didn't mind it at all.... I on the other hand was cursing and swearing up a storm, lol. I HATE the cold. (Bitsy is a little over 5 months old now and she weighs at least 5 lbs) |
It being cold outside makes Sarge go potty faster so he can come back in, I wait by the door so I can let him in right away, its not really how cold it is outside you need to worry about, but the LENGTH of time in the cold. I doubt the wind will blow and freeze a dog to death if they're out less than 5 mins, no matter how cold it is... (curse Ohio and the lake effect-snow :p ) They know their limit and will be begging to come in if it is too much for them. |
Ha ha. We bundle up with a fleece layer under a park and booties on their feet and go out at 5 degrees, so I wouldn't worry too much about 50. But as some of the others said, if you need a coat, they need a coat. Sometimes 50 can feel chilly. |
I usually don't put sweaters or coats on them to potty unless it's in the single digits. Cold air is like cocaine to my boys. It makes them sooo hyper. They fly around the yard a couple times, do their business and then fly back into the house at about 30mph. (good thing I'm always watching to hold the door open)!! |

Well living in Minnesota allows for some really really cold weather. My 5 month old Izzy is adjusting. It was 0 degrees out today without the windchill and I had her in just a winter coat. We've got her trained to go outside, so she knows that when its cold, she better hold it or face the elements! She actually still wants to go out for her afternoon playtime cuz she loves diggin in the snow! I am however going to buy some booties so that her paws dont get so cold like they did today, she was limping cuz I think her paws were starting to freeze. It didnt seem to phase her cuz she wanted to keep playing in the snow!!:animal-pa :tongue001 |

It's really cold We spent all spring and summer training Freyja to potty outside. But now it's -20 degrees outside and she isn't doing anything outside. So she's back to using pee pads inside. She can't stay out long enough to do her business. |
