Optimal age for training I was told by a fellow toy breed owner that our dogs don't really start to get the potty training thing until they are at least 3 months. Is there really an age that is the standard for when training is most effective? |
I don't really know. I've read that until they are four months old that they do not know they need to go until they are going. :D Having raised small dogs since I was a child, I believe it, however, having the same person with them 24 hours a day can make a world of difference in their training. Some breeds are easier to housebreak than yorkies, but that is simply my personal experience and belief. ;) |
Usually yorkies can learn it with about 12 weeks of age. Before this they canīt controll. I made the experience with my three yorkies that they have to go out every two hours when they had this age, but before they often made it one time all 10 minutes and then after 2 hours, so you canīt really train them. Of course you should make the firsts steps, that means watch your puppy! When itīs running in an unusual way with his or her nose on the floor, catch it and put it outside. The same after sleeping or eating and after a play. And if he or she does right say "Fine, very well done!" or what ever you want, but let the puppy know his action was alright. |
Thankyou Simmy and Yorkieusa - I was starting to think that I was not qualified to potty train. People would say to me, "he's still not trained?" He's currently in the crate unless eating or outside for pottytime or playtime with his big sister the rottweiler. I haven't purchased any books on the yorkie but maybe I should look for "yorkie's for dummies" ;) p.s. simmy, Bavaria is on my top 5 destination list! |

Cookie, the contents look like what I need. I think I am going to try and get it at Petsmart today. :animal-sm |
As of 10 weeks and 2 days old, Sully could sit, shake, and lay down. A week after that, he could play dead and roll over. Now, he can do a lot more! Here's a video of his trick routine (some of his tricks, not all) http://www.jusspress.com/day.php?use...entTime=105836 |
