100% litter trained... now how do I get him to go outside? I have a problem :) My 2 year old baby Oliver is 100% litterbox trained (and has been since about 5 months old) BUT now I am needing to train him to go outside. WHY? you may ask: 1. he is a little bit bigger (about 9ish pounds, I think) and pees a lot. The litterbox gets really yucky really quickly. 2. i'm boarding him for the first time and they won't allow the litterbox. I don't want him to freak out (even more than he will be) by not having his usual potty routine so I'm trying to get him used to going outside so that in a month he'll be more accustomed to it. How do I go about re-training him? Any suggestions? I have his litterbox outside and I keep showing it to him. He'll go potty outside (not in his litterbox) buuuuuut the catch is that the door has to be open ALL the TIME so he has free access to it (like he did when the box was in the house) AND IT'S FREEZING OUTSIDE! hahahahahaha ANy other suggestions? :D :D :D :D THank you!! |
Just an idea: Maybe try putting some litter on a pee pad and training him to use that as well? Then gradually reduce the amount of litter on the pee pad until he just uses the pee pad. That doesn't help with making him go outside, but it will help for the boarding. |

Gosh, since he's so used to using a litter pan, I'd hate to have to retrain him just to board him. Have you thought about getting a pet sitter instead of boarding him? It will be so much easier on him if he can stay in his own home anyway. If that's not doable, I'd try to find someone who would board him with his litter pan. |
:) Thanks everyone for you suggestions. The place I have him scheduled for won't do litter but WILL do peepads. The place I'm on a wait-list for will allow the litterbox. On a side note I will be training him to go outside eventually. It HAS TO HAPPEN! :D So I thought I would try to do it now. :animal-pa |
Rocky is 100% house trained as well. But when we go on road trips he will do his things on the street or on the grass. Have you tried walking with him in a park. If you walk around long enough he might go at it. Give it a try. |
You can retrain him to go outside, but I don't know how quickly. That's really up to him. I wouldn't leave the door open, but would let him out every hour, and praise him like crazy when he goes. Some people use a little bell on the door to train them to ring it when they have to go out. Maybe someone will come on and tell you how to train for that. |
I don't think you have too much to worry about. If he is already going outside and NOT in his litter box, then he is already acclimated to the idea of going outside and not having the litter box there won't be a problem. However, if you are looking to have him outside trained all the time even when he is at home, then you can train him to ask to go outside, but do as YorkieKids has suggested. Either train him to go out every hour on the hour, so he gets the gist that that is where he is expected to go from now on and eventually will ask you to go out or put the bells on the door and train him to ring the bells every time you go outside. Or.... I would suggest putting in a doggie door, if his access to the yard is safe (i.e. fenced in) A doggie door will do allow him access to outside anytime he wants, but without having to keep the door open and letting cold air come in. |
well- It's almost finals week here at UCD... so I gave up on the whole leaving the door open thing last night. I couldn't study in the freezing cold :) (door open was BF's idea..........................................) BUT this morning I let him out (the dog hahahahah) first thing and he did his thing and got some treats! The litterbox is still inside (just in case) but I'll be taking him out every so often with the command "go potty" and then praise the heck outta him. I'm sure (if he can hold it) he'll wait for me to let him out to get the treat instead of just going in the box... we'll see :) It's a slow process and he's the smartest dog IN THE WORLD (bragbragbrag) so i'm sure we'll get it, eventually :) thanks for all the suggestions !!!!!!! |
outdoor training My 6 month old Lola is also only wee pad trained. When I take her for a walk she does not do anything. Has anyone every brought pads outside to start to train her to go outdoors but I don't want to ruin the pad training as I live in an apartment and I can't just open a door. another question though--how long should she be able to hold her urine? She is crate trained but starts to cry after 3 hours or so. I think she just wants to be in our bed at night so is she training us or is that about how long she will ever be able to go? You may see if you can possibly find an in home sitter. That way you won't have to disrupt your baby's usual routine |
