Really need your advice, my yorkie keeps trying to escape. I really need some advice. I am getting really worried about Sputnick's safety. Every time he sees any oppurtunity to run outside he does so. We have a big back yard where he loves to play. Everything is closed off but there are rare times when he can escape. He actually got outside once about six months ago. I saw him and nearly had a heart attack! Anyways ever since then I can't stop worrying for his safety. Today my bf was taking the trash outside and Sputnick just jets out. Luckily the external door had closed automatically behind my bf, so Spu just stayed in the hallway, and I ran and got him in time before my bf opened it again to come back. We tried training him with a trainer but it was a waiste of 500 bucks. Spu learned nothing. He is a smart dog overall, but as soon a he can escape he just runs. I am worried that he will get hit by a car since we live next to a busy street. He means the world to me and I just feel like I need to do something to protect him, but I don't know what. He is about a year and half now, so I don't know if it's too late to retrain him ( we got him at 10 months). He knows to stay in theory, when we are inside and a treat is involved. Sorry for the long msg, I just really need some advice. Also is it normal to worry this much? I am actually crying over this... |
Yes it is normal to worry. Nobody wants their baby run over by a car. We all have to stump our feet near Sebastian before we open the door, or he'll be out and off. The stumping makes him back up away from the door. |
My boy Tanner was doing the same thing. every time a door opens now I just use "back, back, back" or "wait." after weeks of consistency when I go to the door he sits. |
I have a low x-pen around my front door because I live right off a busy street also. It's low enough for me to step over but high enough that they can't hop over it. Maybe that's an option for you? |
I worry about the same thing all the time. She bolts for the door. Right now I normally have anyone how would walk right in call first so I can scoop her up in my arms. |
We purchased baby gates and have them in the doorways. They are able to jump over the baby gates, but the screen is normally closed before they are able to do that. Also, do you let him out often enough? Bernie loves being outdoors. I found that when i started taking him out more often, he stopped trying to escape as frequently. |
I have a gate in front of my entry way just in case someone was to come over and they got excited and tried to run out. Is he getting a lot of walks? Maybe he just gets so excited and wants to go out that he bolts for the door. |
