Down
 

I hvae been working with Toby and he thinks down and sit are the same thing...LOL. I have tried to lure him down with a treat in hand but he will NOT lay down. He will extend his neck after the treat but only as far as it goes and that's it. :(

Any other suggestions ???????

Are you doing this on a carpet or rug? For Chip at least he doesn't like his belly on a cold floor.

I can't get the down command to work for mine either. Maybe someone will know a trick to get them to do it.

I dont have carpet except for the bedrooms. I guess I'll move lessons to my room.

Suzy learnt to do it very quickly then started getting confused with sit and drop. We ended up getting a system worked out and now she does both on command without any problems - except she doesn't like the cold floor on her belly, she prefers to do it on carpet.

I worked on it with her by gently getting her scoop her 2 front legs onto my hand and forearm so she was in the drop position as I said "drop." I'd then give her a small treat and told her she was a good girl. (I call it drop with her. Down is for when she needs to get off the human bed.) When I taught her to drop I didn't ask her to sit at any point during the lesson, sit lessons were one day and drop was the next so she didn't get confused as to what command she was being taught.

Don't give him the treat when he sits instead of drops, put him back up into standing position without saying anything and then command him to go into the "down" position again - if he doesn't then manually put him there again. Repeat until he does it correctly then make a huge fuss, give him a treat and then do it again. He'll soon figure it out.

How long have you been teaching him for? It won't take him long until he picks it up, you just have to work on it. Patience and persistence is key. Good luck!
