Litter training??? Banjo is still real young- and is little-not 2 lbs yet! But he has not even began to act like he even knows he is trying to be potty trained- tried pee pads- still using them-if he happens to be on it!lol I am going to drive 35 miles today and get the puppy litter and try that! It is getting cold- he is so little. I have never had trouble housebreaking a dog, but Banjo is going to be different I think! Any one use the puppy litter??? Or have tried it- what is the best kind? I am going to have limited access - might have to order on line:( Any feedback?? |
it took awhile for my 15 week old to use pee pads... we just put them by the door... he has finally gotten the hang of it... he still goes on the tile though (we have him completely blocked off of the carpet). but when he is on the carpet, he has a belly band on. it just takes A LOT of time, patience, and treats! in my opinion... i wouldn't try litter... |
I will say that if is not trained yet don't give him the run of the house if you can't keep the eagle eye on him. A playpen with the litter or the pee-pads if you can't watch him:aimeeyork |
well, he is just about 11 weeks old- I did get some litter stuff yesterday at Petco- only option for it I had, after looking and looking! I put him in it and he acts like it a new toy sand box! Not funny!LOL!he lays down and rolls and runs out and grabs a toy and runs back in with it!Grrrrrrrr!!! He is a baby, he is a baby, he is a baby- but he does not even act like he has any idea, that I am trying to potty train him??????hopefully a light will snap on soon! Should I laugh or cry |
sassyfire............I can 100% identify with your situation! We got Lilly 5 weeks ago, and I went into panic mode almost immediately. I had never trained a puppy before, and at that time we had gotten 2! (We took one back the first week....bunch of chickens, we are!) Anyway, we are doing the crate training. She sleeps in the crate, and is out when we are home. We watch her, and try to get her out at least every 2 hours. I have a small notebook by the door where her trips outside are supposed to be recorded (my sons wrote on the cover that it is Lilly's bowel movement book!). That way, when I get home, or whoever, they can check when she was out last. That has helped me alot. She is doing better, I take her to the same spot and say the same thing every time. She gets a treat immediately after going too. She now looks up for it. When ever she wanders off in the house, we herd her back to people so they can watch her. She tends to have potty accidents inside when she has wandered off alone. I have played with the idea of an inside litter. We live in Maine, and I am not looking forward to the trips out in the snow. Not sure what I am going to do yet. I may have her go in the garage on pee pads, but am not sure how to convince her to do this. Good luck! Lori |
Lori...I am not to sold on this Petco puppy litter! I wanted to get the Purina , but I live in a small rural community in Mo and don't have a lot of options- drove 80 miles round trip to get this! But this from Petco- is recycled newspaper they said! Reminds me of large Rabbit pellet food! think I will try the Purnia puppy litter- have to order online-until I go to St. Louis to sister's in a few weeks-then if he uses it- I can stock up there! You probably have more options there! When i take Banjo out- he is so interested in the cats- he does not have any idea of what I say to him!LOL And the cats love dogs!!! They are just not sure if he is a dog! My others are beagles!LOL Good Luck, but sounds like yours is doing better than Banjo- he is just barley 11 weeks, though! Ellen |
Ellen.....when I first started this potty training marathon, the cats were very distracting outside. I found myself getting mad at the cats for doing what came normal to them! They would circle around like they were stalking the dog. She acted scared at first, I could hardly get her to move, but now she runs to the cats like she wants to play with them. THe cats always run away now when she starts charging them. The other night, for the first time, she went to the door, and looked up at the leash that is hanging on a hook! That is really the first time she gave any indication that she was realizing the routine of going outside. But, just as I was bragging, she pooped inside yesterday! So.............never a dull moment, I guess! Aside from the type of litter, how is the training going? Where I live, there is not too much variety to pick from. It is at least an hour to a Walmart, 2 hours to any type of large pet store (petco, etc). So, we try to plan ahead or find someone going. In my town you can get basic stuff, but everything is much more expensive. Lori |
Lori! that's about the way he is! he did use the pads a few times in the last few days! but I think it was just because he happened to be there! I put the pads by the litter, take him to it 100 times a day!!!!LOL I just think he is playing to hard to pay attention1 He got a shot yesterday at vets- it was bad- he cried and cried- he bleed? It about made me sick! I am a diabetic and that needle was 50% bigger than what I use- and he is so tiny- I really did get all hot and sweaty-lol I give myself 3-5 shots a day- but it about killed me when he get his! I'll never take him alone again!!!! I'm a chicken! I am going to the second hand stores today and look for a play pen! But I bet he throws a fit!!!Ha HAHA!!!! We just got to keep at it! Ellen |
