Please Help Me My Sophie Turns Into Cujo A The Sight Of A Vacuum, Mop Or Broom!!! Here is my problem. I have a beautiful 3 yr old yorkie. Since she was a puppy she's had a problem with vacuums , mops, brooms anything that cleans with a handle. It's insane as little as she is she can bring a full size vacuum down. At first I thought it was the noise but just the sight of it freaks her out. My mom had to buy covers for the vacuums so she wouldn't mess with them. She looks for the wrought iron broom by the fireplace set so she can attack it. It scared me to death because the whole set is iron and if it falls on her she could get hurt really badly so we had to relocate the broom portion of the set to the top of a shelf or fireplace. It's so frustrating because I just moved to a three floor carpeted townhouse and every time my husband and I have to clean it turns into a huge project. Either we have to put up a baby gate it each floor we clean or we have to crate her until we're done. It hurts me to lock her in the crate because she loves her crate and I don't want to use it in a negative way but we just don't know what to do. If you guys have any suggestions for me that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...Priscilla |
I know where you are coming from!!....... I have a little girl that absolutely despises the vac!!! She also attacks brooms and swiffers!! In the meantime, she has taught her little brother to do the same. I find it easiest to have my hubby take them out on the patio for a little while so I can vac. (Or they go into another room and "play") We are working on the "Discipline" approach, but she is quite persistant (as I am also trying to be). You are definitely NOT alone! HA :) My sweet little butterball is 4lbs and acts like a rotti when the Vacuum comes out of the closet...she used to ride on top of my mop... yep just sit there on top of it barking, growling and biting all while sliding across the floor on top of my mop! :) She has also taught her maltese sister Kylie to do the same. I just shut them in the other room until I get done...this prevents the vacuum from falling on the crazy lil' things! :) Good Luck and Welcome to YT! |
Welcome to YT, we are ALL crazy about yorkies, your not alone!!! As for your lil girl I would say put her in a room that she can play in or wait till momma is done doing her thing. Too, about the iron, I say just to be safe if at all possible put them away that way you don't have to worry about her hurting herself. Parker is still a puppy but I have up two baby gates, he isn't allowed to roam free right now. He pretty much goes where I go but if I am not in the same room as him he has limits! Hope this helps!!! :D |

Welcome to YT! Yes, Tatum does the same thing.... with the vacuum, brooms, even the leaf blower. I just have to get someone to hold her or put her in another room. At first it was funny but after a while it just got annoying. There is potential for the worst to happen also. There's a thread somewhere on here about a Yorkie who's face/head was sucked into the vacuum hose (while the son was vacuuming baseboards) and although the poor baby turned out okay, it was touch and go for a while. I saw the thread this weekend and can't remember who it was. Thank goodness it turned out okay but it did warn me to be very careful. |
I had a male Bichon who tried to bite the steel head of the vacuum, brooms, mops etc. I would put him out in the backyard or when the weather was bad just use a baby gate to keep him out of where I was cleaning. Maybe your hubby could take the pup on a walk while the hard cleaning happens. The story TatumsMom told was so horrid to read. It is really scary what these little ones can get into. Good luck |
Welcome to YT. Buddy only goes bonker's when I bring out the ironing board. He has bitten two holes in the cover. Nothing else bother's him. I have tried so many ways to calm him but to no avail. One day I got so mad at him I chased him with the ironing board thinking I would scare him but that did not work either so I gave up and just allow him to attack it whenever I have to iron. |
Hey I just saw Cesar Milan show while ago with a lady and her yorkie regarding issue like this, according to him you have get them in a calm submission state and claim the object, boy I wish I can explain it better:rolleyes: |
i saw that episode as well. maybe decensitizing her with it. Crate her in the room and vaume for a while, have someone give her a treat each time so she associates vauming with yummy food! Do this a couple times a day until she gets used to it or doesnt freak out. Thats what I would try, not sure if it would work or not. Or you could just put her in another room and avoid the drama. According to the dog whisperer... when you take out the vac, you have to put you in between the dog and the vac and put him in a submissive state of mind. you do this by calming him down at the sight of the vac. you shush him and tell him to stop... just as he's about to bark, you have to shush him... keep doing this... he will eventually submit... and ignore the vac. Best of luck... if the explaination is weird.. you have to watch the dog whisperer... |
