exersise since it's getting cold here in indiana, what are things you do to keep your yorkie active? i notice beagan gaining a little bit of weight that i don't want him to have.... any suggestions? there is no heated pool for doggies around here either :-( |
We have a treadmill but it is still warm here. Today was a shorts day. Feels like it may cool off though. |
we don't have a treadmill and i really just can't afford the one for dogs for now. i know swimming is SUPER good for them. i'm about to fill up the tub and just make him swim for a couple of minutes. its cold and snowy outside and he just doesn't like it...and either do i |

i do that with beagan too, he just gets bored and lies in his bed. he has gained about 3 lbs!!!! ahhh. i homecook too which prolly doesn't help at all. he's been on steamed veggies lately for this reason |

i don't feed him alot. but i feed him little bits 4 or 5 times a day. he is only 13 weeks so i'm nervous about cutting portions just because intake is critical at this age |

oh he's just a baby. wow he gained 3lbs? how much does he weigh total? at 13 weeks my puppy wasn't even 2lbs LOL |
he's a hefty 5 lbs ... not by choice. he does not recieve table scraps or many treats (only when he does his business) i believe it's just the lack of exercise. it's so cold here and when i dress him in his coat to take a walk around the block he gets out in the yard, pees, and runs back to the door. i'm just at a loss. this can't go on because it can get super unhealthy, i'm desperate to find a doggie place with a heated pool. there is no such place in the town or even in surrounding towns |

when you got him he only weighed 2lbs? and now he's 5lbs at 13 weeks? how old was he when you got him? |
i feed him anywhere from a 1/2 cup to 1 cup a day i got him when he was 7 weeks old (i saved him from a horrible breeder that sold the mom when he was 4 weeks...yeah, it was horrible) anyway he was about .66lbs i could be over feeding. but i wanted to get him on a good diet (she was feeding him softened PRUINA ADULT FOOD and evaporated milk....) but now that he is on a great eating plan |
it was great of you to save him. he was totally on a wrong diet and you are doing much better by him now. My yorkie is now 4.5lbs and on a raw diet. However she was on kibble when she was a puppy and she never got 1 cup of food. that was way too much. She mostly ate 1/2 cup of food a day and usually didn't eat all of it. so if your little guy is getting 1 cup a day sometimes and 13 weeks i think he's eating too much. Ask your vet to be sure. |
well first... GOOD JOB on switching to home cooking.. best thing you can do for him. So is it that he doesn't like going for walks?? Layla is NOT Crazy about walks AT ALL... so what i do is... dress her all up warm... she wears a sweater and jacket... and every time we get to the corner (we walk around the block) or if the sidewalk ends to cross the street, she has to stop, sit and then she gets her favorite treat. SO now when we go for a walk..s he still resists.... but once we get to the first corner she is SO excited... and the rest of the walk is fast fast fast.. lol.. can't get to those corners fast enough :) but it took a few walks for him to get the hang of it :) |
How do you get them to go on the treadmill? I want Mocha to start using it since it's too cold to go out for walks right now. He hasn't been doing so good the first few times on the treadmill. He would either stand still, jump/leap or run in spurts lol. I tried holding a treat in front of him so that he would actually move on the treadmill, but he just runs a little bit, or jumps to get the treat :p Can you share any tips? Quote:

he LOOOOVES walks in the summertime. hates to even go outside in the cold, he will fight and squiggle when i even carry him out! even when i tempt him with a treat. he's a picky little toot. i will try to encourage more but i can only do so much. 1/2 cup seems about right now that i think about it. maybe some days it's a a little closer to a cup (depending on the meal...he likes some more than others). he does also have the occasional kibble (i always leave it on the floor just in case) but it's natural balance allergy formula so i mean its not horrible and he only eats it when he's STARVING or didn't like what i made. i am just really worried that he could get really unhealthily obese and it stinks because i'm trying all i can. i am going to cut his food but it's going to be a much more fiber (which i'm running out of food ideas!!) seems like i've met my match! |
well today, after many failed attempts to take him for a walk.. we played for 1/2 hour... he slept.. when he woke up i cooked him some food, let it settle and i filled up the tub. i filled it up so his little paws could still touch the bottom but so it would be a challenge for him to walk from end to end. i have sliding doors so i went back and fourth encouraging him to follow me. we did this for about 5-7 minutes and i got him out, dryed him out a best as i could... and after he ran like a maniac around the house.. he wanted to play more. hopefully this helps him loose a bit of weight so he's not a chub. can't wait until summer so i can just plop his life jacket on and swim with him in the lake... it will be SOOOO much easier! |
Thats a good idea, Ive been trying to be creative about keeping my izzy active too. Do you have squeeky tennis balls? Izzy absolutly goes bonkers over hers, we could play fetch/catch for hours. I just throw them around the house, or bounce them in air and she LOVES it. When she catches them she'll run around the house showing it off to everyone; then plops it by my feet and looks at me as to say "do it again!" |
