Potty Training.... Bella was pee pad trained as a pup and did very well with that with few mistakes. We moved a couple months ago and now have a fenced in yard so decided to get rid of the pee pads but things are not going so well. She will be one year old on sunday. We have 3 floors in our home and try to keep her confined to the first one as she will have accidents upstairs otherwise. We take her out frequently and when we think she needs to go. If she has to and she's outside she will go usually. The problem is she doesn't usually do anything to signal for us to get her out when she needs to go. Instead she just goes over by the door and goes. Other times we will take her out and she is always so distracted that she won't go and then when we come in 2 minutes later she goes inside by the door again. When she goes on the floor, right away we show her it and tell her no and then put her outside and say potty outside. Thank goodness for tile floors. What can I do? Also if we are upstairs while she is downstairs she will just go and sometimes I think she does that because she's mad that we leave her down there sometimes. What should I be doing differently? I know the move was a big change too. She also got spayed a couple weeks ago so I'm not sure if she is just stressed out too or what. We praise the heck out of her and give treats when she goes outside. I've never had a problem potty training a dog for outside before. What are your suggestions? Thanks everyone! |
You could use training bells! They sell them at pet stores. You can hang the bells on your door. Teach her to ring the bells when she has to go and repeatedly say "potty" or your action word. Also, you can watch for your puppy to sniff the ground and walk around in circles. That usually tells you she plans to go potty. Good luck! |
I heard that moving change everything to them, just give her time. A year is a very long time habit to break, but with consistence I know you can do it. Maybe a trainer can give you more info:aimeeyork |
Is it possible, that you did to many changes at one time? Did you do the move and take her potty pads away at the same time? If so she might be confused by all the changes. You might consider going back to potty pads. Until she fully gets the idea of going outside all the time. I have heard others talk about putting the potty pad near the door that you want them to use. You could also set a potty pad outside where you want her to go. What about having her on a leash with you, as you go about the house instead of confining her to one area. This way you can watch for her potty signal. She is a little older and use to being around you...she might not like being left downstairs. |
Thanks for the input everyone. I know that it was a lot of change all at once. When we first moved we let her use her pee pads for about a month and we have always had the pads near the back door in both homes. If she does have an accident she always goes in front of the door. So, I know she understands to some extent. I haven't put a pee pad outside in the yard where I want her to go because I live in Germany and the weather here has been rain all the time and then they get soaked and blown around. Thanks everyone. |
