How do you calm your puppies down? I have a puppy who is about 3 months old. I know that puppies are puppies, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how to calm down your puppies when they get super excited? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks! |
I have always turned them on their back and rub their stomachs as I say SETTLE. This teaches them that there are times to calm down. I start by doing this when they are already calm and they learn that this is quiet time. It never fails on my dogs. |
It's really hard when they're little. You can try putting them on your lap and putting them on their backs while you rub their tummy, or just petting them gently when you get them on your lap. Other then valium LOL I don't know how to calm them down. Mine are 2 and 4 and they still play like little monkeys. |
I tried a few things with all of mine. The rubbing the belly is a good dominance (hate that word) exercise. It's also a really good time to teach the sit/down/stay commands. They have to settle in order to concentrate on the commands, and it breaks the momentum they're building up. When they get a little older and just get out of hand, I use the water bottle. (Just had to use it a minute ago as playing started to get out of hand. They are now still rolling around, but more gently.) Good Luck living through puppyhood!! :D |
I agree with the other two posters... I've used that method as well. If Meka is way too hyper, I've had her just "sit" near me (it helps w/ training & listening)... she'll wimper a little (cause she wants to move/play), and I tell her no "quite time" or whatever and that works for me too. Its just like with my human child - sometimes you have to make them just "sit" and chill - otherwise if she played 24/7 she'd be bouncing off the walls ya know :) |
Wow, I am a bit lost on this whole puppy thing and I am so glad I read this post! Thanks for asking and thanks for sharing!!! I am going to start trying to do this with my little man. He is ALWAYS hyper!!!! |
100% agreed... very helpful post! |
The stomach thing is a really good one. If they got TOO out of control I would ignore them until they calmed down. But usually after you put them on their backs they're good. :) With puppies its hard, though. Because as you said...they're puppies haha. |
