potty problem I have a two year old female yorkie and we are having some problems. The first problem is that even though she knows where the pee pad is, and uses it for pee, she tends to wander around when she poops. We do take her outside, but we have very inconsistant schedules and sometimes are not able to take her out. Anyway, she walks around while she poops, and usually gets it near - but not on- the pad. The second problem is, she's good 99% of the time with pee and wood floors, but introduce carpet and it's like a whole new pee pad. We've had to roll up all the rugs because she kept peeing on them. What do I do?? |
Start doing crate training. Our Cozmo will be 2 and that is what we had to do to him when we got him about 1 month ago. He only got to come out and play when he would potty, But I also took him outside ever hour and still do. When he goes potty and you see him tell bad potty and then put him on the wee wee pad and say good potty. I don't know if that help but this worked for me. Good luck |
Did you just get her at 2? Or have you had her and she's just not housebroken yet? And that walking while pooping thing? A lot of yorkies do that for some reason. It's maddening. Outside it's fine, but if you're a potty pad user.......... |
lol. crazy yorkies. no, I've had her since she was about 2 months old. I'm concerned about the crate thing though.... first, how big does it have to be? i have the one we got for her when we first got her, it's less than 2 feet by 2 feet i think. there's room for it at my boyfriend's place but not mine (and of course mine is all carpeted...). And second, when I go to work, I'm usually there for 14 hours. I like to have her at my boyfriend's but he's not home all day either. At least there she can play with the cat. I've heard you shouldn't leave them crated for over 4 hours... is that while you're at home, too? what about at night? how long would you have them crated? it seems kind of cruel to do it all day long and all night long for days on end.... :-( |
Do you have her potty pad in a litter tray? Is worked get for my dog. |
No, I don't- I saw someone on here used some kind of dryer tray... not sure what that is exactly but i like the idea. I tried a long time ago to use a kitty litter box but it was too small for her to turn around in. lol. |
I use a litter box made for the pads, but I would think any kind of plastic item with small sides would work. Maybe a rubbermaid bin? The idea being, they have to transition into it and out of it to go potty. Sometime if the potty pad is just lying on the floor they can't tell if they are on it or not. It should also cut down on her walking to far when she poops. You might want to start potty training all over again. Start by gating off one area for a few days until she figures out the where to go potty. Then once she has it down, you can expand the area a little. Don't forget to have special treats that she can only have when she goes potty. Mine loves cheese and deli meats. In the begining my dog also got the area rugs confused with potty pads. I rolled mine up until he had the concept of the potty pad. Once I felt comfortable with how well he was doing on potty training, I put out the rug. I did this on a day when I had nothing else on my schedule...so I could sit and watch him. I gave him treats everytime he went on the potty pad. |

Lucys change in potty habits I have been reading all the good ideas about re-training and i am trying all of them. Lucy was 1 in Aug. I trained her to a potty tray with pads (rectangular plastic tray used to hold plants, cheap at hardware store fyi). she has 2 trays in the house, one in laundry room and one in bathroom that she has used 99% of the time since she was 6months old. Now though, she has decided to use the wall to wall carpet in the entry hall. I finally placed a tray there too which she used most of thetime but still continues to use the carpet from time to time. I tried moving the tray and blocking the area off to retrain her to her orginal trays. Now she goes to the blocked off area and goes right in front of it on the carpet of course, unless I catch her in enough time to get her to a tray. She still continues to uses her trays as well. I am now resorting to the re-training method of treats when she uses her trays. I don't know if she is stubborn or confused????? I am frustrated! |
I am having the same problem. I have a 7 yr old Yorkie and he is peeing on everything. He used to not be so bad but we have a 7 month old baby and in the last 3-4 months he has gotten worse. It has gotten to the point that we are thinking about getting rid of him. He is ruining everything. Bedskirts, corners of couches, blankets, etc. If somebody cant help me fix this problem we are going to have to find a new home for Jack. |

What is the name of this box? Where can you buy one? Any help would be appreciated. Ours will use the pads most of the time, but have a big problem hitting the edges and spilling onto the floor. |
I'd try crate training. I know mine think rugs are just big poop pads, so I had to roll mine up too. If there not there they will go outside, but put the rug down and it's all over. |
