:( Am I doing something wrong? His name is Jacky and he is roughly 4 months old. there are a few problems that I can't seem to fix. 1. Don't bite/ nip me! Whenever i try to pet him (and hes not distracted) he nips me. 2. Stay behind me when we are wallking. Not like a damn maniac. 3. Don't jump on guests. 4. He whimpers when he wants me, and if i ignore him he starts to bark. All he does is a rub on the tummy or the head. i sometimes shoot him with a water gun or put on a muzzle. I also say no. Everything I have patience for, but I really don't like him nipping. Help me out :( |
So since he wants your attention and you don't want to give it to him you put a muzzle on him? I'm really confused. |
He's only 4 months old. That's what puppies do. The nipping is normal, that's how they play with their litter mates. Say no, stop playing with him and don't encourage it. The following? I think it's adorable! He wan't to be near you. Jumping on guests? I don't remember any of my kids being able to jump at 4 months... Whimpering and barking? - Play with him, show him some attention. That's all he wants. |
YES! so i am not doing something wrong, I have patience, but I want to know I am goin in the right direction. I have no problem with him wanting my attention, but not by barking, yes I muzzle him for 5 minutes then i take it off. Hes not "jumping" on guests, but he gets on top of them if they are lyin on the floor playin with him, I want him to stay on the ground. Will the nippin eventually stop if i ignore him and don't encourage it? Thats what i've been doing but its showing no progress. He does however knows how to sit and down |
Playmate A playmate is probably in order. I sold a dog that bit and acted crazy w/ her owners because she didn't feel they babied her enough. They wanted a small dog but they wanted independence.... so I sold them a littermate and they are doing soooo much better. That has taken care of every problem they were having w/ her aggressive crazy attention seeking behavior. And remember... your the alpha male.... hold his head down to the floor if he bites (gently but firmly) and growl low in his ear.... this really works... it is pack mentality stuff. I have learned so much about that lately! |
it will stop Skippy stopped nipping at our ankles and socks after a while. I think it's something your puppy will grow out of and someday you will tell someone the same thing I'm telling you- just be patient. He's a baby. Also- if your guests don't want him on top of him, maybe play from a chair or couch? I'm sure the puppy doesn't understand why you get on the ground to their level then not want them.:( |

Oh and its not much of a problem getting ontop of guests if he didn't nip....it bit my brothers butt once :p |
I think the nipping and biting should stop once he gets out of his puppy stage. Cocoa did that same thing and I don't really have a problem with it anymore (he is almost a year old). I'm by far not an expert on training but, I think most of it just takes patience. Cocoa still jumps on people so, I have no idea how to stop that....he is just super friendly and wants everyone's attention. The playmate idea is a good one, I did notice a lot of Cocoa's "bad habits" became obsolete when I adopted Daisy. (I originally adopted her because I wanted to save her from the animal shelter and find her a home and fell in love with her and so did Cocoa). I wish you the best of luck!! |
 why would you muzzle a 16wks old baby yorkie and shoot it with a water gun. i am sorry but i am shocked. he is a puppy and is just learning. would you gag a 16wk old baby if it was crying.it makes me mad that people think it is ok too do this.i know puppies need to be taught but surly this is not the right way to go about it. he has only been in this world a short 16wks and has had to get used to leaving his mummy and litter mates and has to get to know and trust you. treat your baby with kindness and you will be rewarded. |

sorry for the double post:rolleyes: |
Just remember your pup is still a baby... Barking is a way for them to communicate with you, just like a crying baby... Its either gonna be food, bathroom or attention. Biting is because they are teething and also because that's how they play at that age... Maybe some toys for your pup to bite on may be helpful... All in all, just be patient and consistent... Nothing happens over night :) |

For the nipping, this is a puppy stage. Say a firm "No" and give him a chew toy preferably a bullystick. As for whimpering, there is no need to use a muzzle or water gun when all your puppy wants is some attention. Give your puppy a break. He is only 4 months old. While gentle training is encouraged, there is no need for muzzles or water gun when all your puppy wants is some love. |
Give it time! Time, time, time. He will outgrow so much. Just offer him chewies and toys instead of fingers and toes. And if he's getting insane, tell him "Uhuh" in a deep, low, but NOT loud tone, and turn your back on him and ignore him for a few seconds. Now, when he allows cuddling and DOESN'T bite, he needs a HUGE REWARD! Some bite of yummy, or a sweet praiseful voice. He WILL outgrow it, and you'll be saying "Remember when..??" |
