Can not hold it all night My yorkie Cody, consistently wakes up between 4 am and 5 am every day to pee and poop. I usually get up at 7:30. I do let him sleep in the bed with me because I'm gone most of the day. I usually wake up when he jumps off the bed and I let him go outside. How can I teach him to hold it? I feel bad taking away his food and water, but I think I may have too. He knows he is supposed to go outside but if I'm not around to let him out or I don't notice him by the door he will go on the floor. I also keep him in an xpen in my kitchen while I am at work, he will most of the time pee on the pad while I am gone but sometimes he just tears it up. I'm getting really frustrated. He knows what to do but it seems like he just doesn't want to! Any suggestions would be appriciated! |
Deiter use to get me up like that. I would put him in the xpen and go back to bed. Then if no accidents I gave praise and treats. Now he won't get up until I do. He will be 1 year on the 18th. Good luck. You are doing what Cody wants and he is showing he is the pack leader. |
You need to take water up 2 hours before bed (last trip out.) How old is he? Loki didn't sleep through the night until he was 1. |
Cody is almost 11 months old. That is a good idea with the xpen. I'll try that, he hates going in there so maybe that will teach him to hold it and not jump off the bed. He does pee and poop in the xpen while I'm gone from home, so I don't know if he will learn to hold it in there or not. |
It CAN be a habit rather than desperation!! They are not above waking up about the same time every night!! LOL...only an idea!! Can you maybe ignore Cody and see what happens and he may just stop doing it when he finds you have no intention of getting up??!! ;) |
Gino is almost 8 months and I have had him alittle over 2 weeks now. And he gets up every night still. I have 2 pee pads in the Apt. One by the back patio door where we go out to potty and one in the bathroom right off my bedroom. Sometimes he goes on those, sometimes not. I am hoping he gets the hang of it. Soon. LOL |
If I don't get up and let cody outside, he will go on the floor, both #1 and #2. So I'd rather let him outside than let him ruin my carpet more than he already has. I've tried putting the pee pad down at night but its so dark I don't think he sees it and just goes whereever! When he gets up, I'm going to start putting him in his cage so he will have to learn to hold it, then let him out at 7:00 when I get up! |
Is it just maybe that is bladder is still to small to hold a potty all night? I know Koda would get up from bed in the middle of the night and go 1 and 2 also. That was up until a month ago. Now he is a little over 8 mos and he sleeps all night long right beside me in bed. in fact I have to wake him up like my skin kids, lol! He will lay there and want to sleep more and I have to make him get out of bed in the morning, lol! :-) |
You need a crate or a bell. Either crate him at night, or put a bell by the door so he can at least wake you up. Loki rings his bell if he needs to go out at night. Sammy bites my nose and dances on my head until I wake up... :rolleyes: When Loki was a puppy we crated him at night because he would whimper when he needed to go out. I still think you have a combination of him drinking too much too late and him not being able to tell you he needs to go out. Also, mine are housetrained but they have to go so bad in the morning that I let them out *immediately* when we wake up for they will go on the floor by the door. I've found that one last trip super late at night (like 11-12) helps them sleep an extra hour or so in the morning. |
Spike has a schedule. We take him out to pee and poop before bed, then every night around 3-345 AM he will bark and wine to be let out to poop and pee outside. He is only 3 months old and he was really sick before, so we leave his food and water in his crate to make sure he is eating properly. I figure when he gets to be about 6 months or so, he will sleep through the night. |
Late night Yeah... one late night... 11 or 12... gets me until morning... if I fall asleep early she wakes up at 4 or 5 too.... but do you free feed? I know there are 2 different schools of thought... but as long as they eat their 1/4c a day... you aren't depriving him... if you feed at specific times you can better schedule his pooping times. I still have problems w/ mine because I have a busy hectic life so her potty training schedule suffers... but when I am devoted... no accidents...and if I only feed 2tms a day she will sometimes sleep 12am -10am... like me... she is not a morning dog.... |
