how do i potty train my yorkie??? I really need help potty-training my yorkie. she is 16 weeks old. she goes to the bathroom whenever and wherever she wants to. its almost always around the same place. how do i get her to go on the wee-wee pad?? i really need help and am really desperate. please help me !!!!! if you know ANYTHING at all that you think i could try please tell me now. PLEASE!!! |
You need to confine her to an area with the pad when you cant watch her closely. Xpens are great for this. Take her too her pad after she eats, plays about every hour. Tell her to go potty. When she does it make a big deaL out of it reward her with attention and treats. It just takes persistance. Dont let her go all over your house or your setting bad habits |
I sprayed the pee pad with the Simple Solutions Pee Training Spray until she got the hang of using the pee pad. Once she got her scent on the pee pad, then she pretty much used her pee pad. I use washable pee pads, so I think even after they're washed, they retain some scent that may not be discernable to us, but dogs still smell it. Praise like crazy (and give her treats) when she does use her pad. When she goes anywhere else other than the pee pad, yell "NO" really loud but in a low voice and clap your hands. I rarely ever say "NO" to Bitsy, I usually use the sound "uhh uhh", so when she hears me say "NO", she knows mom means business. Please note, that if you don't catch her in the act, its pointless to yell "NO" because she won't know what the heck your reprimanding her for. I am by no means and expert, but I've had Bitsy for a little over 2 months. She was basically pee pad trained in about 3 weeks. It's been close to a month now and so far, no accidents (knock on wood). I think the key is consistency and vigilance. Whenever she was out of her play area, I watched her like a hawk. I didn't take my eyes off of her for 2 seconds. I took 2 weeks off work, and a week of half days. I didn't watch TV, read, go on the computer. I basically just watched her, and it was sooooo boring just staring at your puppy all day long, but it paid off. When I couldn't watch her (when I needed to eat, shower, wash dishes etc..), she went back into her play area. Good luck! |
The only way to house break any dog is to catch them in the act. When you see her sniffing around watch her closely. As soon as she squats down clap your hand and say no firmly. Then pick her up and place her on the pad or outside wherever you want her to go and as soon as she does say good girl, pet her and give her a treat. The key is consistency, and praise (I belive the treats are the most important) Some other things to know is usually 5 -15 minutes after eating or drinking your puppy is ready to go. Some puppy's hold onto the #2 longer so watch all the time for this. After they have played for awhile they also need to go. Also dont give them access to food and water all the time. Since she is 16 weeks she is about ready to go on the 3 times a day schedule. We have had Aiden for just over 2 weeks and he is already trained to go outside. He will whine when he needs to go out. We keep him in a pen with no food and water just toys and a bed. When we/he wants to play we let him out for about an hour. We throw his toys and he runs and slides for them. Then we take him out to potty. There are a couple times a day he just cocks his legg for a treat and I give him one anyways. The goal is to get in there heads the right thing to do and they will get rewarded. I am not saying that I belive he is 100% house broken but it wont take much longer. My wife has really spear headed this puppys training. I work most of the time day and night. So I just told her what to do and she has done it very well. At 16 weeks it is still a little early, I have never owned a dog that could be trained until 5-6 months. I did have a english springer spaniel that never messed in the house from day one. So there was really no training him. But yours is at the age where I would start training but not expect too much. I hope this helps. Hang in there. |
Hi, Can you move the pad to where she is peeing? My little girl kept peeing in the same spot, and I put the pad there and she used the pad. Maybe put it there until she gets used to it, and then move it a little at a time. Whitney |

Ditto    You have to monitor her closely... Keep in mind that after drinking/eating, shes gonna have to use it within the hour... So you need to keep on her... and definately, give her an area all her own. She shouldnt have the run of your house while shes training. It really works with consistancy! Meka is 8 mo's and I can tell her to go potty on the pad - and she goes right to it... So, it can be done :) |
