Working 8 hrs/day & Potty Training?!?! For those of you who do not have the convenience of being at home w/ your puppy to crate train, how did you do it??? I would love to crate train but I know that I could not expect my new puppy coming to stay in there that long. I've heard about pee pads (?) and newspaper but doesn't this teach the dog that it's okay to "use it" in the house??? Please help!!! |
Pee pads just teaches them that is where they need to go. I work from 7:30 to 4:30 and my furbaby stays at home during the day. She is 8mo's now and she's doing good. I have her area setup in my washroom w/ her bed, water, toys and a pee pad. She is confined to that area until we get home. I do use an additional spray thats suppose to help them go potty on the pad and she rarely has accidents. You just need to be consistant. You have to keep showing them and making sure they understand the right/wrong way to do it. When we first got her, I had her in a play pen with the same set up and that worked for us. Accidents even with Pee pads...now what Well I have a little nearly 8 month old male yorkie around 4 lbs now, he goes on the pee pad, however he does have accidents now and then and pees on my carpet. Sometimes I think he does he because he is upset with me, I have no idea...but sometimes he just looks at me as he pees :o) I show him where he has to go but he still has accidents, he will pee one moment and then go over and drink loads of water and have to pee again. I use pee pads you wash, he is in a 8 foot xpen with his crate in there and toys...plus water and dry food whie i work for 8 hours. I dont mind him being trained on the pads, but I wonder if he will ever stop having accidents or is it because of the pads he thinks he can go anywhere. suggestions and ideas are always welcomed ;O) thannks Kat |
I keep Teddi in half of my kitchen (I found when I gave her the whole kitchen it was too big and she would forget to go back to the pad to pee). She is now over 1 year and she has it down now. I take her out before I go to work and she pees and poops and then I put her in the kitchen and she usually only does one pee during the day and then I take her out right when I get home from work. She used to pee a few times and poop once durning the day on the pads but now I think she has figured out how to hold it longer. If you do the same routine every day they figure it out. She also used to cry (actually it sounded like a bird) when I put her in there but now she is completely silent because she knows that's the routine. Good luck! |
Lucy has a large kitchen/family area that she stays in when we are at work. I trained Lucy to a potty pad and it took her a month or so to become consistant. I also used the green pee pads, Nature's Miracle I think they are called. I tried the unscented but these for some reason worked the best for her. Unlike dogs I have had in the past that were larger I know that Lucy is small and to expect her to hold it all day is unrealistic. If I can't hold it for more than a couple of hours how could I expect a 3 lb. baby to do so? Patience, and more patience-and then some more patience has been the key for us. Best of luck :) |
I'm out of the house at 8:00 and back home at 5:00. Bitsy has run of the bathroom and the hallway. I use a SuperYard XT to gate off this area. In her play area is her crate, washable pee pads, food and water. Since day 1, she has used her pee pad when in her play area and hasn't had an accident. She has another pee pad for outside her play area. It took her about two weeks to use the other pee pad consistently and not go on my living room rug. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, so it's not like it's a huge area for her. She's only in her play area when I'm at work and when I can't watch her like a hawk. She's a little over 4 months now so I need to watch her because she chews everything! |
I purposely got Bella in June so that my 15 year old would be home during the day to help with the crate training during the summer because I knew it would be really hard to train her with us all at work/school. It worked great, she's 8 months old now and completely house trained (she doesn't even go during the day in her x-pen). I wish I could give you some advise, if you decide to crate-train just be consistant with the crate training in the evening and weekends and I'm sure eventually you'll see results, it just may take a little longer.
