Sit...Stay... When did you start training your yorkie to sit and stay? How long did it take to train them? Did you use treats? |
There is different level of " sit and stay". I can get a dog to sit and stay within minutes but for short period of time. For those long "sits and stays" you see in obedience trials, it takes months and months of training. With Teddy it took 6 months before I can get him to sit with just a "sit" on command and stay in position without me being in the room for 30 minutes or more. I do use treats a lot and still do but for things he know how to do really well, its all verbal praise with no treat involved. |
HI! My little Mia is only 11wks (tomorrow) and she has learned to "sit" on command and she just got "lay down" today. I have no idea how to get her to stay... I get so excited from her doing the trick, that I am hooping and hollering, and going crazy, that of course she can't sit still through that!!! If you figure out the stay thing... let us know!! I use treats... she will do the trick without it, but to start off, I like to give her a little more incentive. Repetition is the key. And lots and lots of praise!!! GOOD LUCK! |
I've had tucker for 2 weeks. I do use treats but its only pieces of his food. he learned sit in 5 minutes and down in the next 5 minutes. he was 10 weeks old. good luck and remember not to get frustrated they're only babies teel us how he is doing!! |
I taught Coco to sit and lay down within a couple of hours. I just used her favorite treats. The stay command is proving difficult because the puppy in her doesn't know how to stay in one spot but sit and lay down took about 2 hours and she totally does it on command. |
I started training Maggie at 8wks. to sit and down. Only took a few tries using small pieces of cheese as treats. She is now 4 months old and sits, and down----with only hand commands, no verbal except praise. We are working on "Stay". She gets in the down position, and I can go to the next room for about 5 minutes. So far, so good. |
[QUOTE=hollyb]. I have no idea how to get her to stay... QUOTE] Here is how I teach "stay". 1. Start on a leash 2. Have the puppy in the heel and sit position on your left side. 3. Put your hand in front of her nose with a flat palm and say "STAY". 4. At first, reward with praise and a treat if she does it for a couple of seconds. Keep increasing the time before giving the treat. 5. Eventually step to face the puppy and give treat if she doesn't move with you but stays in the sit. 6. Take a step back. 7. Keep increasing the steps back and then walk back up and reward the stay with praise and a treat. When you take enough steps to get to the end of the leash you can start to teach "come"! Good luck! |
Chewy is almost 5 months and really only knows come and is now learning drop it. I let him run wild which is bad, bad. My husband yells at me that it's time I start training my dog and he's right. I taught my previous dog to sit in 1 day in increments of about 10 minutes throughout the day, but then again, a pug will do just about anything for food! |

i wasn't looking for anything in particular when i found this web page. check it out. it give you the instructions for treaching various tricks. some of them have video to see the trick taught. I just thought some of you would like this. Mine do some of those tricks but i didnt' have any instructions on how to teach them. i just used my own method. and come to find out it was about the same way as taught on this site. I am rather proud of my self and they are the ones that do the tricks. (or did my dogs teach me?)LOL any way here is the site. enjoy http://www.kidsanddogs.bravepages.com/tricks.htm |
