dog food agression towards another dog I recently adopted a Yorkie/Silky he's about 1-1 1/2. It seems that when I feed my dog and then feed the Yorkie he will get very agressive and attack my other dog. does anyone know or how to handle / train this behavior? has anyone else experienced this? Please help! it's becoming annoying. |
Try dropping in high value treats into his bowl while he is eating. Do it first by yourself without your other dog, just randomly walking up to him dropping them in and walking back, repeat. Then do it when your other dog is in the room, if he growls give him a correction and no treat. No growling = treat. |
it only happens when I feed them at the same time or I'll give my other dog something, he'll run up to my other dog and start growling in the "attack mode". how do I correct that? He doesn't seem to have aggression towards me just my other dog and sometimes cats. |
Honestly, the best way to approach this is to feed the dog in separate areas. TJ did this for a few months and I had to feed Roxy 'behind' the kitchen island. I also had to 'stand guard'. When TJ acted up - I told him "NO" and made him go back to 'his' own bowl. After a while this behavior stopped. I think they call it some form of "Guarding" If you google search Food Guarding - you'll find lots of stuff. Best of Luck! |
I heard somewhere, that if a dog has food aggression...it usually was because he had to fight for his food as a pup...don't know how true this is. They also suggested, when they do this...go to their bowl and add more food...this way they see that no one is going to take their food from them. Although it also seems like you're rewarding the bad behavior. I think if this was my dog, I would certainly use the most helpful search feature, so it can be corrected ASAP. Good luck, and let us know how it all works out. |
Also, please remember that the 'new guy' is a rescue - and you will never know exactly 'what' his past was all about. It will take a little time, patience and training, but all will work out. It also takes at least 2 weeks - for all animals in the house to except one another. Just don't 'baby' the new guy and always remember to put your 'first' pets first, so everyone knows who has what rank...until they all get along and realize that NO ONE is leaving - hehehehe |
its jealousy, has to be.. lexi is my one and only and when any other dog is around her, you cant give the other dog anything or she will attack...shes crazy... i never took food or anything away from lexi / never, shes the same way and i dont know what to do either... i want another puppy eventually, and thats going to be the only problem i have.. |
Thanks for all your advice everyone! I have been feeding them in seperate areas. I do the "Stand gaurd" thing too. Things have improved a little so we are on our way to recovery... |
