Why all of a sudden?
 
I have had Isabelle and Tabitha (both Yorkies) for 8 months and they got along fine. In the last week they have fought almost everyday and sometimes several times a day. On Tuesday, Tabby bit Isabelle's eye! I don't know why all of a sudden this is happening. I give them equal attention. It's not over fighting over food or toys. I can't even see it coming. Neither of them barks before they fight. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on what I can do? I read that I'm supposed to break up a fight otherwise I may get bit but if I don't they will both get severely injured.

Have they been spayed? If not it could be due to one or both getting ready to come into heat. Sometimes the hormones heat things up.

Yes, both have been spayed. They used to play fight but now its ugly.

Are they both the same age? and are they nearly a year old? if so Think of them as kids of about 14. One of them has probably started challenging the other's place in the pack. Although it's quiet I bet one of them has been "eye-balling" the other and then the other one says "that's enough, buddy!"

In the first instance, I would go in and to them and say "bah" or something really loudly and angrily at them to try to get them to stop. That's kind of saying "I don't know what you're fighting about because I'm the boss."

I wouldn't try to get in between it physically because you may only end up bitten. And i find that trying to intervene physically can actually make dog fights worse. Generally dogs won't go to the point of actually hurting one another, only until one or the other backs down. They'll sort out the pack hierarchy eventually.

Dogs are constantly assessing their place in the pack and if one has decided that she has a chance to take over from the other there's no rationalising to her I'm afraid.

I'm sorry to be not much help. But may be read the Dog Listener by Jan Fennell which talks alot about dog pack mentality.

Are they sisters? Its a common problem with sisters which is why its not really advised to keep litter sisters together.

Best advise I can give you is to treat them as individuals, walk them separately, train them separately and feed them separately. They need time apart and you need to create a different relationship with each of them, this will help their relationship with eachother.
