Sewing Machine Wanted :) I'm looking for a new hobby and thought I'd try sewing. Haven't sewn since school. So I'm looking for a starter machine to play with. Anyone? |
I always recommend the old Singer treddle machines for beginners. You have total control with them. You will pay an antique price sometimes. If you're interested in one, just watch the auctions in your area or catch one on ebay. Otherwise, there are lots of nice, new machines available today. You probably wouldn't want one that does lots of "fancy" stitches, but who knows?:D |
I'm thinking to make pillows, blankets, dog stuff...etc...to start. I don't even know what the prices are out there! Am I in for a shock! LOL |
I bought my first sewing machine at a yard sale for 7.00...a little old lady had it...its a singer and is really nice...my second one is also a singer and a year older than the other one and I paid 5.00 for it...also a little old lady......:D :D :D |
I got one from this family the grandma died or something it was really old fashion singer machine it was heavy too I paid it 25 dollars. |
Okay...so who's selling theirs!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D |
I have a brand new one in its box never opened..... I bought it 6 months ago.... I thought I was going to make Pixie and paris matching dresses! HA! I can't sew! And I really am not patient enough to learn.... I was waiting to list it in the human garage sale.... Its a decent one too... not super fance but I did not go totally cheep, I'm stupid like that... I can't play chess but I spent 200 on a really nice set! lol Well it looks nice! Whatever! So.... I'll have to go take a look at it and see what kind it is... I'm not even sure what I was going to ask for it.. I had not even gotton that far... Its kinda heavy for shipping I think.. it weighs like 15 pounds... Shipping would be pricy I think???? Let me ask hubby... or someone speak up if you know! :) |
I have a machine that I also bought at a garage sale for $25 and have never used it. I think it is a Singer as well. I'm pretty sure but I'd have to dig it out to be sure. The lady told me it worked fine but what would I know since I never used it, never even plugged it in. I would be glad to just get my $25 back plus shipping. It also is very heavy. Where are you? I'd have to figure out the shipping if you are interested. I would only charge you what it cost me - the $25 plus actual shipping. It doesn't have a case or cabinet but you can buy the cases pretty cheap at Walmart I hear.:) |
Okay everyone, let me know your bottom line price including shipping :) Oh! Also, do any of them have the manual? (I don't know how to sew yet  ) |
Have you looked at Wal-mart? They have brand new machines for under right around $100.00. That way you have all the manuals. The GREAT thing about Walmart is that you can buy something, try it for about 25 days and if you don't like it, simply return the item for a full refund. Be sure to keep the box AND your receipt. Good luck! |
Probably best idea! I have to say that is what I would do. I'm afraid the shipping is going to kill you on a sewing machine.:) |
Hi Breny I sew curtains and blinds etc. To get started I would go to your local library and get a basic sewing book ,also buy a basic machine but make sure it has a light because you will really need it!Best of luck. |
I got my latest from walmart it is the singer simple. I have to get to know it a bit more before I decide if I'm going to keep it. I really think it is a good machine...it's just the operator! ;) |
Mine would have everything since I never even opened the box! lol its as brand new as new gets... where are you located and I will calculate shipping... If you PM me your zip code that will be enough for me to get a quote.... ;) And I'll give you the brand and all of the info... :) Kathryn |
Kathryn, If you can let me know too. If she doesn't go for it, I would consider it. I was just saying that I want to take a class. I'll PM my zip. Thanks! |
4 Attachment(s) ok.... So Breny has first dibbs... But if she passes... Its up for grabbs... I took a few pictures for ya all.... Shopping .com gave it 5 stars and says it sells from 90.00 to 130.00 Its a Brother XL-2600 It has a 25 year limited warenty Never opened Purchaced 6 months ago and so far shipping has been 20.00 via Fed Ex Ground four days and five days to the two zip codes I quoted.... Yours may be more or less??? I paid 115 for it, plus .0725 tax..... my total was $123.34 I'll be happy with 80.00 for it and then you cover shipping what ever it is... the closer to California you live the cheaper it will be!!! ;) And if your real close... you can come by and pick it up! lol :p Any takers??? Its not used... Its Brand new! And its been very well stored for the whole Six months that I have had it! lol:rolleyes: Here are the pics |
This is what Shopping.com said about it..... This versatile sewing machine is perfect for garment construction, craft projects and basic mending. Loaded with features, the Brother XL-2600 sewing machine offers 59 stitch functions, 25 built-in stitches, an automatic buttonholer and free-arm sewing for shirt sleeves and pant legs. It weighs 16.5 pounds in the box and the machine its self weighs 8 pounds. 16.5 pounds... thats why its so costly to ship  The gal who sold it to me said that she has three sewing machines and one of them is this model and she loves it??? She said it was great for beginners like me but nice enough and had all of the really great features that once I got good ( like that ever happened! ha!) I would not get bored with it! that I'd still love it! And get years of use out of it! Well... for me... it never made it out of the box! I am sooooo Bad! I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up! lol Kathryn |
I have that machine in storage and I liked it. Well worth the money. |
That is a great deal! I love my Brother and their customer support is great! also if you need pars or want to add things they list everything on their site that goes with each machine even have the books online so you dont ned to buy a new book like I had to do w/ my old singer :( I'm sure you'll find one in your price range. I found a 600.00 machine at Goodwill and all I had to do was buy a new presser foot for it. I took it in to get it checked out, calibrated etc and they were so surprized how much I paid for it. I think it was my best deal ever!! |
